Dib wrote down the class notes in a rush while the students around him began hurriedly leaving the classroom.
It was lunch time.
Dib had been spacing out a handful in his classes- more than often, and it was causing his class work to be mediocre. This class period he was so in his own mind he completely forgot he was even in a classroom. The inside of his bottom lip was sore and metal-tasting. Whilst he went through worries and thoughts in his head, he was biting and chewing on his lip, a habit he has developed from nervousness.
What was he so busy thinking about?
Zim.
Zim has acted so strange. Not like he's not strange- he really fucking is; with the fact that he's a goddamn alien. But it's not the Zim-kind-of-strange. The alien still acts like his dumb self but he has a hint of...friendliness now-? No, not exactly that. Is it? He seems to be getting closer to Dib, and Dib is frankly not sure whatsoever if this is a good thing or not.
'Why did I ask him to hang out together during lunch?! What's wrong with me!?', Dib mentally questioned himself angrily, feeling as if he's going to commit the biggest mistake in his life. But then again, he's a nervous wreck. Maybe he's overthinking things? It could be, but who knows...Oh right! Lunch!
Dib shook himself out of his messy thoughts- it's already lunch and he's still in his seat looking like an idiot!
The teacher didn't even seem to notice he was still seated, and he hurriedly and clumsily packed up his unfinished notes into his backpack and rushed out the opened door.
Zim.
Dib felt a weird nauseous-like feeling in his stomach. He was feel nervous, and it definitely was not a good thing. He felt as if he was walking himself right into some kind of trap. He huffed. Well, if it is a trap he'll get himself out of it. Somehow.
Going over to the lunch line that was now short because of his lateness, he skipped the stacked trays and simply picked out a pb n j sandwich.
The tables were nearly completely taken, except for a couple empty ones in the back and of course, a single table with only one "person" sitting on it.
Zim.
Dib's teeth began chewing on the inside of his cheek- did he really wanna hang out with Zim-? Was it safe?
Before Dib could make up his mind, he watched as the alien turned around and blinked at him with his pale, blue (and fake) eyes. Then a friendly smile spread across his green cheeks and his small gloved hand waved at the boy, a gesture telling him to come over.
Dib stood frozen for a second. He took a deep breath in from his nose, and released it from his mouth as if admitting defeat.
He walked over to Zim, still wondering why the hell was he so dumb to actually invite the damn alien to hang out. Then again, Zim was having a pretty hard time- with his leaders being dicks and labeling the ex-invader as a "defect". Maybe he did genuinely want Dib's company?"Hello, Dib-stink!" Zim greeted, his smile forming up to a grin.
Dib contemplated sitting down next to the alien, but decided to take a seat on the chairs in front of Zim so they could face each other. Also just to be safe.
"Hello, alien boy. I see you also got a pb n j sandwich?"
Dib nodded towards the sandwich in front of Zim, which was untouched. Zim grunted and pushed it away from him, "I don't understand how you humans can eat such...VULGAR food."
Dib snorted out a small laugh and took a bite from his own sandwich, "vulgar? You're over exaggerating"
Zim grimaced before the sandwich could even touch Dib's lips and he shuddered in what seemed to be horror.
"Disgusting"
"What? Didn't you like, eat a sandwich before? What's so different about those and these?" Dib asked and lifted up the sandwich up to Zim's face. Zim moved his head away and frowned.
"Well first of all those sandwiches weren't from here, earth boy. They are made for irkens. Much more delicious than these sad things"
Dib squinted his eyes in thought and shrugged, taking another bite from his lunch, "well I doubt I would like it- alien food doesn't sound that appetizing. Don't you get hungry at school? Like, do you even eat enough? You're pretty thin, man. Even scrawny I would say"
Zim scoffed at this, his face flushing in embarrassment, "scrawny?! Look who's talking, Dib!! I do eat- I eat at home, I cannot stand this skool food! How dare you make fun of Zim's body!!"
Dib rolled his eyes. Jeez, Zim over exaggerates a lot doesn't he? "I'm not making fun of you, Zim. It's just not healthy for someone to like...not eat- I don't know about aliens' diets but I'm sure you still have to eat."
Zim's offended frown slowly curled up to a smile and he cooed in a joking way, "aww, you care about me, Dib-stink? You care if Zim eats or not? How sweet"Zim let out a snicker when Dib dropped his sandwich on the table with a stutter, "N-NO! Gosh Zim, I was just curious"
The green alien faked a frown, his eyebrows (fake ones, of course) furrowing with false sadness, "what?? So you don't care about Zim?? You don't care if Zim hasn't eaten and dies from hunger???"Dib groaned and brought a hand to palm his face in frustration, "fuck, Zim, you're dumb. Drop the act it's weird!"
Zim laughed again, louder this time. Dib took a moment to actually think about the question- did he care for Zim? I mean, he is hanging out with him, if he chose not to obviously he wouldn't give a damn. I guess he did kind of care for him...? Dib quietly groaned in frustration at that thought.
He wasn't going to admit it to the alien though, who knows how much teasing he'll get from that.
It's odd, he thought.
