Tokyo, Japan

_______________________________________________________________

The world was ending.

You seemed frozen in place as chaos ensued around you. People, who had been full of life moments before, dropped to the floor in a lifeless heap. Cars crashed as their drivers joined the dead, fire began to consume the nearby buildings with a perilous hunger, and, worst of all, there were those things.

They looked human, other than their blood-red irises and the glistening white fangs that peeked out from the corners of their mouths. This, to you, was a clear indicator that the reign of humanity was at an end.

Vampires.

Creatures from fable, bloodsucking beasts that lingered in the shadows as they waited for an opportunity to strike. You didn't want to believe that they truly existed; you wanted to believe that they were simply fairy tale creatures, figments of the human imagination. You wanted to stay blissfully unaware of the reality unfolding before you, unaware of the fact that these dangerously beautiful creatures were now coming into your city to round the survivors up, undeniably and irrefutably real.

Tears welling in your eyes, you looked down at your shaking hands.

How were you even alive?

The virus had swept through humanity and killed just about everyone you'd seen, and yet, there you were. Standing. Alive.

The monster on the loudspeakers had mentioned something about only those above the age of 13 being affected by the sudden viral outbreak, but you still couldn't stop wondering why you of all people deserved to survive while so many others perished without so much as a warning.

Why?  you asked yourself as your footsteps carried you away from the city, why couldn't I have joined them?

Here you were, a 13 year old girl, stuck in the middle of a foreign country as your whole world came crashing down. Never could you have anticipated that a fun family vacation in Japan would eventually transform into the damnation of humanity, become the place where you watched your parents meet their end on what was supposed to be Christmas.

You weren't quite sure where you were running; this wasn't your country, after all, and each step lead you farther and farther away from the city of Tokyo, the only place in Japan that you had some degree of familiarity with. With every step you took, you found yourself even more lost, although, at this point, you couldn't bring yourself to care.

How could you, with everything disintegrating into ash before your eyes?

You let out a gasp as your foot suddenly caught itself on a loose rock, and you barely managed to catch yourself as you stumbled towards the earth. Slowly, you lifted your grazed hands, grinding your teeth as you realized one of them had started to bleed.

Blood...

It was in this moment that a certain thought began to circulate in your mind; perhaps death would have been merciful in a situation like this, but here you were, alive, and you sure as hell weren't going to simply sit around and let yourself be captured by these arrogant creatures. Life would almost certainly be worse like that, and you were already devastated as it was. You didn't think you could bear things getting worse.

You had to keep running. You couldn't let them find you.

Spitting on your palms, you tried to blink away the tears spilling over your eyes as you wiped the blood and dirt off onto your pants and continued to run, as far away from the city as possible, to somewhere where you could be safe.

The city burned with a foreboding red as you did so.
