Immediately, Eeriuffi seemed to return to normal, albeit the weary look in his eyes. His tensed muscles relaxed beneath you, and his hackles gradually began to lower.
Your hands still shaky, you felt yourself slip your blade into your back pocket.
You had a hard time comprehending whatever just happened; part of you wasn't entirely sure if it had just been your imagination. A vampire finding you and leaving you completely unscathed? No, it didn't seem possible. It had to be your imagination you told yourself, again and again.
However, deep down, you knew that what just happened was as real as the wolf pressed against your side, as real as the floor beneath your feet. Eeriuffi wasn't one for getting spooked, after all, and there he was beside you, wariness swimming in the depths of his eyes. If the vampire had been in your imagination, there was no reason for Eeriuffi to be in his current state.
Gingerly, you traced your fingers over the skin on your neck, wishing to clarify the fact that you truly had come out of the encounter untouched.
Not a single scratch could be found.
Breathing still heavy, you forced yourself to stand up, eyes locked on the place where the vampire had been standing moments prior. He hadn't left a single trace of his presence; the earth upon which he had stood and the tree branches he had watched you from were eerily normal, seemingly untouched.
Hundreds of questions spread like a wildfire within your mind, nearly all of them impossible to find an answer to. Though part of wished to simply sit and meditate on what had just occurred, you knew that there was one thing you had to do first: ensure the safety of the pack.
Hand still resting on Eeriuffi, you began to walk back in the direction of the pack. You heard a soft snort behind you before you felt the wolf move under your hand, silvery fur trailing gently between your fingers.
You let him take the lead, knowing that he had a much better sense of where to go in the massive expanse of the forest. As you watched his form silently tread the earth, your mind was once again consumed by the encounter with the vampire.
"Little wolf," you murmured quietly into the air, remembering the words he had spoken to you before vanishing. Was that truly how you came across? For years you had lived like one of them, and though you were human, you weren't quite sure how much you even resembled one anymore.
Years of dirt were trapped beneath long, claw-like nails, and so much of it obscured your body that it had become difficult to fully make out the color of your skin underneath. Your hair, wild and untamed, laid on your back in a tangled mess, most likely full of leaves, twigs, and other objects scattered about the forest floor. Your clothes, the same ones that you brought with you all those years ago when you first entered the forest, were still intact to some degree, although holes littered the cloth just about everywhere one could see.
Not to mention the smell. You had grown used to it, but you could only imagine how you would smell to an outsider who wasn't used to this way of life out in the wilderness. While there was water in the forest, it was incredibly difficult to bath; you did it when you could, but there was no possible way to truly be freed from the dirt when it surrounded you everywhere.
Long story short, you probably looked like a complete disaster. A complete disaster who just so happened to also be a human living among a pack of wolves.
You let out a soft sigh. Before the apocalypse, you knew that your current appearance would be one to be completely ashamed of, but something about it now was invigorating; you truly felt alive with the wolves in the forest, even though you weren't one of them. Everything about their way of life, which you had incorporated into your own, from hunting as a pack, mourning the loss of another, sharing prey together, sleeping with their bodies together to stay warm, howling at the beautiful glow of the moon in a star-filled sky... it all filled you with joy.
