The first thing you noticed when you woke up was the soreness that afflicted your body with even the smallest of movements.

You let out a groan, clenching your teeth as you struggled to push yourself up from the cold concrete beneath you.

For the past four days, you'd been on the run. You'd allow yourself breaks on occasion to prevent your body from completely shutting down, but that was it. For hours upon hours each day, you found yourself walking closer to the unknown in an attempt to escape the deadly clutches of the vampires.

The harsh winter sunlight met your eyes, and you found yourself squinting towards the abundantly clear sky. A sudden pang struck your heart as the events of the past week returned to you. Such a beautiful sky for such dark times...

Just one week ago, things were normal. Things were right. Everyone had been happy, living their lives and enjoying spending time with their families as the holiday season filled everyone with a sense of joy and tranquility.

Four days ago, that all came to a painfully abrupt end. Your memories were plagued by smoke, by fire, by the screaming and sorrow that engulfed everything and everyone as the vampires emerged from the shadows.

You forced yourself to fight back tears, the bridge of your nose stinging. You needed to find a place to replenish your supplies.

In the past four days, you had been able to collect several things from abandoned stores and homes without being noticed by the vampires. You found that they were numerous at night and that, while they still scoured the cities for survivors in the daytime, there were far less of them while the sun was out.

The idea that such powerful creatures could be hurt by something such as sunlight almost seemed comical to you. Of all the things to hurt them, sunlight seemed to be one of the least probable things to choose from, but if there was one thing you learned in the past four days, it was that things didn't have to make sense for them to happen anymore.

Eyes scanning the empty streets for any sign of life, you slipped a thin blanket into the bag you carried with you, swinging it behind your back.

Quickly.

With a shaky breath, you exited the alleyway you took refuge in for the night, being cautious as to not make too much noise. As you took in your surroundings, you noticed an apartment complex to your right, and, in the distance, what looked to be a supermarket.

Deciding that the supermarket would be your best bet, you quickly made your way towards the building.

A putrid odor invaded your nostrils as the glass door swung open, and your eyes began to water. Bile rose in your throat as your stomach threatened to empty its contents.

I think it's safe to say there's a corpse around here.

A strong part of you wanted to run, to escape from the suffocating presence of death, but the other part of you knew that, should you leave, it may be days before you come across any source of food again.

You couldn't let that happen.

Plugging your nose, you took a deep breath of air through your mouth. You ran throughout the aisles, looking for the preserved foods that wouldn't go bad within days of you retrieving them.

To your relief, you found the aisle relatively quick. Opening your bag up, you threw in an assortment of canned goods, everything from bottles of water to preserved fruits and several bits of meat.

Making sure you fully zipped your bag, you left the aisle, deciding to take a hasteful look around the store in case there was something more for you to grab.

You made your way towards the back of the store, the only place you hadn't seen yet. As you did so, however, the smell got much, much worse. Deciding that it wasn't worth it anymore, you turned back towards the front of the store, preparing to run away from the putrid scent before you ended up emptying the contents of your stomach onto the floor.

"Shit-"

Time seemed to slow as, in the corner of your eye, you noticed something you hadn't seen before.

The corpse.

Your eyes widened in horror as the realization hit you, and you suddenly felt weak in your knees.

It was a child, and, by the looks of it, they couldn't have been more than six or seven. Two deep, gaping holes on his neck were stained with blood, his blood, and the surrounding skin bloomed purple with bruises.

The worst part about it was his eyes; they were still open, wide with horror and pain. His last moments had been ones full of agony and fear, all alone with a vicious bloodsucker.

A vampire had done this.

You couldn't take it anymore; a scream ripped its way out of your lungs as you sprinted towards the front of the store, and, the second you made it past the doors, you vomited. It  burned past your lips and throat, and hot tears dripped down your face.

How could they?

You choked on a sob, blinking the tears out of your eyes. If anything, this was further confirmation that you needed to get out of this place as soon as possible. You couldn't let yourself die like that poor child had.

Your breath shaky, you took a step forward. Ahead of you, civilization would soon come to an end. Ahead of you, wilderness would soon rule. Ahead of you was freedom.

All you had to do was make it there alive.
