Time seemed to slow, leaving you standing, paralyzed, as fear consumed your entire being. Trembling, you forced yourself to look behind you towards the source of the voice.
You froze.
Standing only a few yards away, with his irises the color of blood, was a man.
No, you reminded yourself, suddenly feeling nauseous, That's not just a man.
There, right in front of you, was a vampire. He carried with him an inhuman beauty, tall, muscular frame towering above yours. Thick red hair framed his face, and you noticed two pointy ears protruding from his head. He wore a small smirk on his face, watching as you squirmed under his gaze. Eeriuffi stood beside you, teeth bared as guttural snarls escaped him.
"I just knew something odd was going on in here. I thought I caught a whiff of human blood in this forest and decided to investigate." He took a step forward, and Eeriuffi let out a menacing bark. "It seems I was right, hm?"
In response to his movement towards you, you found yourself taking a step backwards. The words he spoke sounded foreign to you; it had been years, after all, since you had last heard anyone besides yourself speaking. For what felt like an eternity, it had just been the sounds of your pack and nothing more, and now, after so many years, the first thing that spoke to you was a monster hiding behind human flesh.
He watched your trembling form with what looked to be amusement, one sharp, white tooth peeking out from the corner of his mouth. Humming softly, his gaze traveled to Eeriuffi, who remained in a threatening stance.
With a shaky hand, you grabbed a fistful of Eeriuffi's fur, desperately trying to calm your erratically beating heart. The vampire watched each and every one of your movements, and you felt your skin crawl beneath his gaze.
He chuckled, deriving some sort of sick pleasure from the fear he caused you. Fangs gleaming dangerously in the early morning sun, he told you, "Imagine my surprise when I followed the scent of your blood, only to find you, a human, among a pack of wolves." Crimson irises met your own, and you found yourself unable to look away from them. "Quite intriguing, no?"
When you still remained mute, at a complete loss for words, he tilted his head to the side, saying, "Tell me." Once again, he took another step towards you, and you felt your grip tighten on your blade. "What are you doing all the way out here in this forest, away from the rest of humanity?" That smirk of his was still plastered on his face, ridiculing you, mocking the way his very presence invoked such a terror in your heart.
"I-" You could hardly manage to get out even the smallest noise, lower lip trembling in fear as you choked on your words. Eeriuffi looked as if he was on the brink of attacking the vampire, eyes wild and crazed with rows of his sharp, white teeth on a dangerous display. Black claws gouged the earth, leaving deep streaks in the forest floor.
With a shaky breath, you kneeled by Eeriuffi, wrapping an arm around him. "Please," you whispered to him, pressing your cheek against his side, "Don't attack him." You knew that, should Eeriuffi attack the vampire to protect his pack, he would most certainly die. Based off of what you had seen before coming to the forest, vampires were creatures of tremendous strength. Even the weakest ones seemed as if they were more powerful than the strongest human. This vampire could definitely end your and Eeriuffi's lives in an instant if he desired.
You couldn't let anything happen to Eeriuffi or his pack because of you, because of your blood. You wouldn't be able to forgive yourself if, because of you, the pack you had come to love had any harm come to it.
"Please." Your voice broke, and your eyes wearily traveled to the vampire, who watched you intently. The look in his eyes was unreadable as he observed your interaction with Eeriuffi, watching earnestly as your gentle murmuring calmed the wolf down.
Then, in the blink of an eye, the vampire was no longer standing before you. Confused, you rubbed your eyes, wondering what was happening.
"You intrigue me, human." You let out a gasp, feeling your heart leap out of your chest as his voice emerged from behind you. Warily, you turned back around, only to see him standing opposite to where he was before, chuckling at your panic. Eyes narrowing, he said, "Something about you seems... different."
The wind began to howl, stirring the branches above you. A beam of sunlight hit the vampire's face, illuminating it with a soft glow. Before you was a beautiful monster, a predator playing with his food. You were completely at his mercy, a fact both of you were aware of, and yet, there he was, enjoying unnerving you and messing with your head instead of moving in to make the kill.
Unsure of what to do, you simply watched him with a worried gaze, arm wrapped around Eeriuffi. The wolf turned towards you, pressing his face against yours as he began to lap at the tears forming in the corners of your eyes.
Please.
You heard a sigh from the vampire's direction, and as you looked at him once more, observed a displeased expression on his face. "I'm afraid that my detour here will have to come to an end now. My comrades won't appreciate how long I've been gone for," he told you, his smirk having returned. "I'm terribly sorry that I wasn't able to get to know you better." With shock, you watched as he jumped effortlessly into one of the trees, observing you from the roof of the forest. "I look forward to the day we meet again."
And, with the five words that would ingrain themselves into your memory, he murmured, "Until next time, little wolf."
And, just as quickly as he first appeared, he was gone.
