"They're horrible", said my mother. She shook her head, as if she was clearing cobwebs. "They treat you good, then they leave you for dead." I was seven at the time and listening to my mom talk like this was normal. I knew what she was talking about. She was talking about people.
She never referred to herself as human and she certainly never referred to me as human. I thought it was a bad thing, like she was saying I had no humanity. Although later, I figured out that it was a compliment. It was "supposed" to be a compliment, because she thought people were horrible. All people.
She meant I wasn't human, because I had a heart. She thought SHE wasn't human, because she had a heart. I laugh at her now, because humans are good. We all make mistakes, but that doesn't make us bad people. Some people are bad, but not all of them.
Lately though, I begin to doubt myself. I mean I haven't met ONE nice person since silencers overran the world. Maybe no good people are left. Maybe the people that died from silencers took all of the people in the world's humanity. Possibly the world isn't worth saving. But I'll keep going anyway, even though nothing will convince me otherwise.
