The Back-Alley market was one of the most notorious places in the city, and for good reason. Here, anything you could think of can and probably did happen. You walk through the streets, watching various stalls filled with contraband than you can throw a cop at. You round the corner, checking your list and making sure you had the right info. Your final target was responsible for a minor trafficking ring, nothing special. What was concerning was what they were trading.
Born and bred herbivores.
"[Name], have you arrived?" You crouch down, looking at your phone. It lights up with a holo image of Ms.Sakura, watching from the comfort of her house.
"Yeah, target's right around the corner. Should be an easy job. Think he's gotten too comfortable in the market to put guards around. Big mistake." Ms.Sakura nods, sending you a detailed map of the building.
"Right, I want to see you out of there in at least 30 minutes. Remember, it's the lives of herbivores at stake." You nod.
"Got it." With a click, you disconnect the call, standing up and checking your equipment. A simple silenced pistol, and a few extra magazines in case you'd need to go loud. You sigh, before steeling yourself.
"Showtime."
Entering wasn't that hard, unless you count the dead lions sitting in the dumpster, which you didn't. The place was the typical abandoned warehouse; dead light bulbs, open windows, the works. Plenty of places to hide too. You make your way across, hiding behind crates and in the shadows whenever you get the chance. You hear a loud bang as your sneaking around, and you immediately hide behind an unhinged door. You peek out slightly, seeing a pair of doves moving a cage with a few herbivores in them.
"And that makes three! Phew, I tell ya, boss sure is moving things along kinda fast." One of them says, looking at the other dove. The darker one grunts.
"Yeah, but we don't get paid to question it, all we gotta do is move these runts from one owner to the next." They laughed, leaving through another door. Silence rung out in the warehouse again, save the occasional sniffle from one of the herbivores. You make sure the coast is clear, before running over to the cage. Your footsteps draw their attention, and they quietly gasp at your appearance. You gently shush them, putting a finger to your lip and smiling. You take your pistol, aiming carefully at the lock, and with a few bullets, manage to break it open.
You slowly open the gate, watching them shrink back from the noise. You sigh, knowing they might not be able to recover from all this. You stand up, looking down to the door where the doves went. You had to finish the job, but you couldn't just leave them behind. Weighing your options, you decided to see if they'd follow you. You took a few steps towards the door, hearing nothing. Then, the patter of footsteps a little ways behind you. You open the door quietly, leaving it that way for the herbivores. The door lead to a square staircase, and you steadily climbed it, hyper aware of the footsteps behind you. You check your phone, watching the target's movements.
Top floor, bingo.
Reaching the end of the stairs, you lean against the door, listening for anything beyond it. Silence. You turn around the the group of herbivores, motioning them to stay put. Hopefully, they understood you. With a deep breath, you grip the knob, before slamming the door open.
Instantly, a few dozen guns turn their way towards you, firing straight at you. You duck, firing back at hitting a few of them dead on. You practically dive behind one of the tables, pushing it over for cover. The lull of gunfire forces you to pop your head out, and you see the remaining animals reloading. You take the opportunity to fire at the rest of them, leaving none standing. The only one left was the target, who was fleeing away through a side door. You grit your teeth, rushing after him. After a few twists and turns, you managed to catch up to him, tackling him to the ground, aiming directly at his forehead. You were both breathing heavily, his eyes wide with fear.
