USAGE: We use past simple for an action which happened at a definite time in the past.
We spent our holiday in Switzerland last winter. We had a great time there.
2-)We use it for an action which happened immadiately one after the other in the past.
First the old lady open the enveloped. Ten she read the message, she began to cry.
3-)We use past simple for past habits or states which are now finished.
In some cases we can also use "used to".
EXAMPLES
People travelled by carriage in those days. (or) People used to travel by carrige in those days.
People washed their clothes with their hands.
I used to eat chocolate but now I don't. Did you used to a lot of sweeets when you were a kid?
Did you used to sleep alone when you were a kid?
Affirmative (+): Mozart wrote more than 600 pieces of music.
Negative(-): Mozart didn't write more than 700 pieces of music.
Interrogative(?): Did he write more than 600 pieces of music?
W-H Question: Who wrote more than 600 pieces of music?
Short Answers: Yes I did./ No I didn't.

IRREGULAR VERBS
There are no spelling rules for the verbs that have irregular past simple forms.

TIME EXPRESSIONS: Yesterday, yesterday morning, the day before yesterday,last week, last month, the last time, two weeks ago, in the past, in 2014, the other day, How long ago...?etc.
