They were at the dorm again waiting in the superintendent's office. Mr. Liam Harvard came and greeted them with a sweet smile. "Oh, hello! Officers: how can I help you? But i must say; thank you for catching the scumbag who killed the two innocent boys. We can now sleep in peace, because of you guys," he said while shaking hands with each of them. "So, what brings you here? The case is already closed, isn't it?
"No need to thank us Mr. Harvard, we just did our job, but still thank you anyway," said Edward and added, " Yes, the case is over; we have come here for another reason, actually."
"Mr. Harvard ten years ago you reported an incident, you were the key witness of that case. Do you mind telling us about it?" said Elena looking at the middle-aged man closely when she saw a shadow cross over the man's face, but it happened too quick that she almost thought of it to be her imagination.
"Ah, well that was a long time you know, May i know why you are asking about it?" Mr. Harvard said putting up a poker face.
Elena noticed the slight change in the tone and said, " Well! As it happens, we have found the culprit. But, He had been in an accident. When we began to investigate, it turned out that he was the wanted criminal. So, can you please tell us?
"Oh I see, well sorry for earlier, actually the truth is it was a quite horrible experience and i didn't want to relive it, that's why, " said Mr. Harvard shuddering at the thought of recalling the incident.
Ten years back.
"I was late that night from work. It was quite dark, there was no moon in the sky. As, I was walking down the street, I heard some noises. It felt like muffled cries, they were coming from the alley at the corner. I was scared out of my mind, but still I went there to look, that's when I saw the devil. He was strangling that poor girl. Her clothes were all ruined. I began to shout for help and went towards him and push him off the girl. But, by the time I reached her, she was already gone. I tried to call the emergency, but the male hit me with something. He tried to strangle me too, but I guess I was lucky a patrol car came patrolling. The man got startled by the siren and ran away. Somehow I stand up and staggered my way towards them. Luckily they saw me and stopped the car near me, that's when i black out. When I came by, I was in the hospital with a bandage on my head. The police came, and I told them everything. I helped them to make a sketch of the man and that's how they caught him. It was a terrible experience"
"When he got away I was so afraid that he would come for me to take vengeance. I was also given police protection for sometime. But that incident still haunts me. That man is the part of my worst nightmares," Mr. Harvard told them everything with tears in his eyes and shaking body.
Peter consoled the man, " Thank you! Mr. Harvard for telling us and we are sorry for making you recall a traumatic experience. We are so sorry."
"No , it's okay. I apologize for being such a coward," said the man calming down a bit.
"Oh no! you are not a coward, you are a brave man that you tried to help the girl. Anyway thank you Mr.Harvard once again, we shall take our leave now," Edward said standing up. Then they all left the office.
All this time Elena was deep in thought somehow she had a feeling that the story wasn't entirely true. Maybe i will get to know the whole truth by talking to the captain, she thought pondering over the story she had just heard.
They were back at the precinct and now they were sitting in their captain's office waiting to hear his part of the story. Mr. Herald was sitting on his chair lost deep in thought.
"We got the case of a teenager's murder. We were lucky for having an eye witness. I was the officer in charge of that case. We got the sketch from the eye witness and began to search the culprit. We caught him after two days, passed out in a dumpster. The garbage boy thought of him as a corpse and called the emergency service. He was totally wasted.
He looked like a complete psychopath. When he admitted of his crime, he showed no remorse. It was like as he was telling the story of a drama. We were transferring him to prison when he got away. Unfortunately, it was me. We were on our way when suddenly he started hyperventilating and puking, foam was beginning to come out of his mouth. I got startled at the moment. We quickly called the ambulance. I was the one who went with him in the ambulance. Somehow he took a scissor out of the paramedic's pocket and stabbed him in the neck and i got stabbed in the shoulder. It happens in the blink of an eye before, I can get time to register, he jumped out of the moving ambulance. I tried to go after him, but my vision got blurry and I scum to darkness. I could never forget myself for that. I even got demotion because of him that son of a......"
Mr. Herald hit the table with force, knuckles pressed in fist.
The three people left their captain's office and went to their chairs. They had learnt about Daniel Storm. But what they came to know had nothing to do with Alex's Murder.
"Did Daniel killed Alex before getting himself in to the accident?" Edward said more to himself.
"No, he got in to the accident while entering the suburbs." responded Elena in as a matter of fact tone. "Did you guys find out about the person who caused the accident? she added.
"Oh! About that. The driver had a heart attack and that's why he lost control of the vehicle and collide with Daniel's. He couldn't survive the impact and died at the spot. " Peter replied.
A thought came to Elena's mind and she was quick to voice it out. " Could it be possible that Daniel was going there to get rid of Alex's body? After all John was buried and we may not have found about it if it weren't for the construction."
The other too looked at her dumbstruck."It is possible, he was driving the perfect vehicle for this crime, and also police found some digging tools in the vehicle," acknowledged Edward.
"Find out about the houses Mr. Christian was in charge of taking care of." Elena blurted a thought coming across in his mind.
