. . .
Serenity.
It was found in the rain drizzling outside in the middle of the night, tapping on her windowsill. Lulling the world to sleep as she lay awake, the sound of its calming beat caressing her. Petrichor flooded the room through the screen of the window she'd cracked open, smelling of earthen tones and watery ambition.
It was found in the peppermint tea that she sipped as she neared the end of her book. Every page that was turned started a new adventure and trailed closer to a finale, every drop of warming tea slowly drained from her mug. But it didn't worry her - the kettle was already on to prepare her new cup.
It was found in the music playing on her phone, soothing her like the blankets wrapped around her. Dusty piano instrumentals floated through the phone's speaker, hushing the chatter in her mind and giving her a moving assurance.
It was found in the candle crackling next to her, filling the immediate area with wistful forests and open meadows of wildflowers. Its wax ebbed as the wick whispered its burning secrets into the air. The pairing of the rain and her candle conglomerated to create a soothing aroma that welcomed her hygge.
But mostly, it was found in her partner sharing the comfortable space. He pulled her close, matching their breaths and fluttering his lips over her shoulder. They sat, having no care in the world, her reading a book and him enjoying the calm. The only sounds they made were his attempts to kiss her, and her scolding that she was trying to read. (She didn't really mind, of course.)
Serenity flooded the room, and for a moment, they shared the quiet that was so lacking in their lives. In those rare lapses of time, they reveled in each other's company and lived only in the present. No amount of good books, or mugs of tea, or instrumental piano pieces, or sizzling candles could be better than spending the night with the person she loved the most, the person who constantly gave her the sense of serenity, no matter their surroundings.
He was her rock, the one who never failed to provide her a safe feeling, the one who made life more cozy.
She loved him and his serenity.
