"Mum, seriously hurry up, the footballs about to start" I shout from the lounge.

"Alright Skye, I'm coming now, hold your horses" mum says as she eventually sits down on the sofa next to me.

"This is a big match mum, it's a derby, Everton vs Liverpool." I explain while staring intently at the TV screen.

"I know hun, you get like this every time they play eachother," mum says to me.

"How can you expect me to not, this is a deep-rooted rivalry and I need to show my support for the blues," I say looking down at the Everton top I'm wearing and kissing the crest.

"Why do you still support that team, they don't seem to be very good" Mum says like it means absolutely nothing.

"Because mum they've been my team my whole life, it's not like I can just switch who I support," I say looking at the woman like she's mad

"sure you can just buy a different shirt." Mum says smiling at me while I just glare back.

"I can't believe you actually just said that, I'm disowning you as my mother now," I tell her ignoring her protests of confusion and instead concentrating on the tense game ahead.

The game finishes with a 1-1 draw, my team getting the last-minute goal to secure the one point putting us 6th in the table, a good 4 places behind Liverpool but I don't care right now.

"I let you stay up way past your bedtime to watch that Skye, now go and do your teeth," Mum says to me

"Mum I'm 18, I don't think midnight is very late," I say helping her fluff the cushions back up.

"It is for a school night now go and get changed please," mum says ignoring my protests of wanting to stay up later.

I don't bother disobeying knowing that she'll give me some sort of punishment in the future for it. I head to my room and get changed into some joggers and one of my dad's old t-shirts, it doesn't smell like him anymore but at least I've still got it. I'm getting into bed when mum comes I to my room.

"you okay sweetie" mum asks me sitting down on the edge of the bed looking a little sad.

"Yeah I'm fine, why'd you ask?" I say since my mum never comes into my room when she's sent me to bed.

"I just, I don't know, do you regret coming to live over here with us in America" Mum says making me sit up and look at her in surprise

"what, why would you say that?" I ask her confused.

"you just seem so happy watching your home team play soccer and I can't ever take you to see a game or let you watch all the matches since the time difference is too much. We took you away from where you grew up and to a completely different country" Mum says tearing up a little.

"mum stop, please. We've been having this discussion since you adopted me when I was 8. You gave me a family, a clean bed and warm meals for me everyday. You showed me what it was like to be loved and appreciated but most importantly you gave me a place to call home, yeah maybe I miss the UK sometime but my homes here now, with you and dad" I tell my mum pulling her into a hug.

"What did I do to deserve a daughter like you" Mum says squeezing me tightly.

"well you went to the orphanage, picked me, then signed a bunch if papers" I start to say sarcastically making mum slap my arm.

"I'm joking, I'm joking, I love you mum." I say kissing the women who raised me half my life on the cheek.

"I love you too, now get to sleep and I'll see you in the morning, your dad should be home by then too," Mum says as she turns of my bedroom light.
