Chapter Thirty-Seven
Alice tried to calm herself down as Blake kissed her neck and covered them up with the sheets. She concentrated on listening to his breathing as he quickly fell asleep, holding tightly on to her. Sleep never came to Alice as she lied awake wondering if it would be rude to wake Blake back up for a second round. She managed to turn her head around just enough to glance at his peaceful face, and decided that it would be too unkind to interrupt his sleep.
Finally, after maybe an hour, Alice decided it would be best to get back up and do something other than think. She pried herself out of Blake's arms, reached over, and pulled her wheelchair close. Once she was seated, Alice grabbed her pajamas off the floor and went to the bathroom to get dressed. She washed her face and brushed her hair out before escaping the room and leaving Blake to his sleep.
Sex always had a way of waking Alice up, and until she could get her mind working on something else, there was no way she would be able to sleep. The feelings Blake had left in her were too new to contemplate for the moment, and she desperately needed a distraction. Never had a man taken his time to make sure she was happy, make sure she was taken care of. Never had they cared about her feelings, wants, or desires. But, Blake had done just that, leaving Alice with a sense of wildly confusing wonder as she quietly made her way around his house. She would never be able to thank Blake enough for what he had unknowingly given her, but Alice vowed she would do her best to try.
She wheeled herself into the living-room and turned on the TV After an hour or so, her mind began to drift off, until her attention was again drawn to the TV. An advertisement for a local house cleaning service came on the set, offering cheap and affordable maid service. Alice looked around the dark living-room and thought that Blake should call and make an appointment.
The house just seemed sad, almost as if most of it had been covered up and forgotten. She turned off the TV and made her way into the kitchen where she eventually located some cleaning equipment under the sink. Alice decided to start in the dining-room, where she already had a head start with the table. Even though she couldn't reach very high, it was actually pretty easy to do a lot of the work. Blake would have to come back and dust the lights and the crown molding, but other than that, most everything was in Alice's reach.
She continued her journey through the downstairs, working her way back into the living-room and the mud-room, and finally into the other bed-room right next to her own where Blake was fast asleep. In each room, Alice pulled the sheets off of the furniture and wiped everything down as best as she could. Some of the furniture looked like it should be moved around, but she didn't have the ability to do so. Just being in the next room over made Alice's thoughts drift back to their actions from a few hours before. Her attempt to keep Blake out of her thoughts had failed miserably, and all she had to show for it was a relatively clean first floor. After quickly finishing the second bedroom, Alice headed back towards the kitchen to put away the supplies, most of which she had managed to cart around with her on her lap.
As she traveled back down the hall towards the kitchen, Alice saw the staircase looming in front of her. She slowly counted the steps and decided that there were thirteen of them. It was going to be a chore to get up and down them, but her curiosity got the better of her. Alice unloaded her bucket of supplies onto the floor and got her wheelchair as close to the first steps as she could. She reached out and grabbed the second step, pulling herself out of her chair. Holding on tightly, Alice finally turned herself around and was successfully sitting at the bottom of the stairs. She grabbed her bucket and set it a few steps higher up, and began her slow accent upwards.
It took a lot more work than Alice had originally thought, but she finally made her way to the top. Her arms were sore from lifting herself up, and her butt was freezing from sitting on the cold stair steps, but she had made it to her destination. Unfortunately, Alice's wheelchair had to stay at the bottom, so now she was pretty useless up here. Still, she wanted to explore a little and see what else she could clean from the floor. The first thing Alice did was to empty out her bucket, then she carefully picked up the broken frame and glass and placed them both inside. She left her bucket and cleaning supplies were they were, and pulled herself around on her butt, letting her useless legs trail behind her. The first room Alice entered was a bathroom, only this one was a lot bigger than the one downstairs. It smelled like Blake, and Alice decided that it was probably his when she noticed that everything looked pretty clean and useable.
