 Chapter Forty-Two

Blake let Holly drive his car home, knowing all too well that he was much to drunk to do so himself. Holly wasn't exactly sober either, but Blake really didn't care anymore. The car slid a few times before Holly finally reached Blake's house and pulled into the driveway.

The moment Blake made it into his bedroom he had the sudden urge to throw up, and barely made it to the toilet before his stomach rejected it's contents. Blake sucked down a hearty swig of mouthwash before returning to his bedroom and collapsing on top of his bed. Flickering thoughts of Alice kept popping up as Blake tried desperately to fall asleep.

Just as Blake's eyelids finally closed, giving Blake the comfort of darkness that matched his heart, there was a soft knock on his door. Blake knew full well who it was and ignored her, hoping Holly would just leave him alone. The knock came again, and Blake groaned as he tried to turn his head away from the door. The third knock sent him into a rage. Why Holly couldn't just fly back to Seattle and leave him in peace was beyond him. “What!” Blake roared as he ripped open his door.

Holly stood with one arm stretched up as far as she could reach, resting on the door frame. Blake let his eyes work their way down Holly's body as he took note of what she was wearing. Alice's little red number, that Blake had the misfortune of never seeing Alice in, was now squeezed over Holly's body. Not that it didn't fit her, but Alice was maybe a size smaller and it would have fit Alice much better.

“Take it off. Now!” Blake said, slamming the door back shut in Holly's face. Blake had been dreaming of Alice dressed in red for days now, and the sight of Holly trying to take Alice's place was too much for Blake to process. Blake's door was flung back open and Holly stormed in with her hands on both hips.

“What is your problem?” Holly screamed, yanking Blake around to look at her.

“You! You are my problem, Holly. How dare you put that on and show me. Can't you tell I'm miserable? Alice is the only one I want to see in that thing, ever. God, why can't you leave me alone?”

“If it makes you feel any better, Blake. You're little perfect Alice was the one who told me to put this on. She told me to come have sex with you, and she told me that all she wanted was for you to leave her alone.”

“She said that?” Blake asked, giving Holly a scrutinizing look.

“Blake, I just want you to give me a chance. I don't know what Alice did to make you love her, but I'll do it too. Just tell me what you want, and I'll try to make you happy.” Blake couldn't help but recall how Alice had done her best to make him happy during her stay with him. Visions of her blue eyes and warm smile crept up into the deepest parts of his mind.

And now, Alice was gone forever. She hated him, as she made it so evidently clear by the bathrooms at Jim's Tavern. And if Holly was being honest, which Blake could only assume she was, Alice wanted for Blake to give up his fight and claim Holly as his own. With some small amount of self-pity, Blake threw Holly down onto his bed. If Alice wanted him to move on, then that was exactly what Blake was going to do. Whether he liked it or not.

Alice felt herself being moved as she was roused from her sleep. At first, Alice couldn't place her surroundings, and a jolt of fear erased any fleeting bits of drowsiness from her head. She bolted upright, reaching her hands out to the complete darkness, hoping for some clue as to where she was. A warm hand pushed her back down and Alice could hear the ragged breaths of someone next to her.

“Calm down Alice. It's only me.”

“Wallace?”

“You guessed it.”
