•••"Theresa Evans! Put your brother down." I yelled at Teddy as she stood in front of Noah, who floated in the air, with a deep scowl on her face.
"No!" Teddy wailed and crossed her arms. "Noah scared me when I was coming out of the tent!"
I couldn't help but laugh at how ridiculous Teddy was being. I still remember how Alec and Cassia would team up and attack me. "But Teddy, he's your brother," I explained.
"Don't call me Teddy!" She yelled. "I hate it when you call me that! I hate this stupid forest! I hate running away from the Blaze! I HATE you!"
I felt my feet leave the floor and my eyes widened in shock. "Control your anger, Teddy," I warned her.
Teddy shook her head furiously and her brown hair floated around her head and her eyes turned to a scarlet red, burning from the anger within. I knew that look. I've seen it so many times. I've felt it. I've witnessed the anger than can come from that look.
"Teddy!" Noah cried out, still suspended in the air. "Put Dad down!"
Teddy turned at him and growled. I watched as she sent Noah hurtling across the forest, his back crashing into a tree. He fell to the floor and groaned painfully, clutching his back.
When Teddy, realized what she had done, she gasped and eyed her hands curiously. Her eyes no longer blazed with the scarlet anger and her hair fell in a mess around her pale face.
I fell to the floor and turned quickly to Teddy. "It's okay, Teddy," I whispered softly. "It's okay. You didn't know."
Teddy shook her head and tears welled up in her electric blue eyes. I reached out to her, but she flinched away from me, spun around and ran off into the forest.
I turned towards Noah. "Stay here!" I said before running into the thick bush after Teddy.
I followed the sound of the sobs. Lucky for me, Teddy always cried like there was a gale inside her fighting to get out. I found her sitting beside a stream, her face pulled into a deep frown and tears rolling down her face.
I sat on the damp forest floor right next to Teddy and followed her gaze to the moon, saying nothing.
Teddy wiped her tears with her sleeve and glanced my way. "I always fail, Daddy. Always. I can't control my anger so why do you even bother?"
"Teddy, I was there when you came into this world. I know you, the real one inside, not the one you show to the world. Not the one who lets anger take control over them." I stated with a grin. "You're beautiful."
Teddy turned away from me. "But I rage, I get angry, I forget what you said and I mess up all over again."
"Teddy." She turned to me with large blue eyes and I held get gaze. "I love you and that will never change. You are human like the rest of us and you make mistakes. You will continue to make them too, as do I. But what's so special about you is that you own them, feel the hurt and force the pain to make you better."
Teddy's sobs ebbed to a trickle and she jumped into my arms, squeezing me tightly. "I love you, Daddy."
"I know." I squeezed her tightly and together we walked back to the tent.
"Why do you call me Teddy?" She surprised me by asking.
I bit my lip and looked away from her. "When you were a baby, you had this little teddy bear and you carried it with you wherever you went."
Teddy eyed me curiously, perhaps she could see right through my lies.
I was lying to her.
The truth is, Teddy's mother gave her the name 'Tessa' and I hated it. I hated her mother. When she left, I promised to erase everything that reminded me of her. Whenever I would say Tessa, the pain and the hollowness pierced me like a knife and I knew I had to change her name too.
We entered the clearing in the forest and Teddy ran over to Noah when she caught sight of him sitting by the fire.
"Noah!" She shrieked. "I'm so sorry."
Noah smiled at her happily and lifted Teddy from the floor. "It's okay, Teddy." He seated Teddy on his lap in front of the fire and I joined them.
Teddy drifted off to sleep in Noah's arms as the fire burnt down.
"Are we going to die, Daddy?" Teddy asked just as she neared her sleep.
I shook my head and pursed my lips. "We're not going to die, Teddy. We're going to move away from this world to Insipid and start a new life there. Away from all of this, away from this mess I've created."
Teddy's eyes fluttered closed and she rested her head against Noah's chest. "What if we die before that?"
"You won't," I stated adamantly.
Teddy licked her lips. "Promise?"
"Promise."
