"Corporal Jason Brody Barnes," the boy mumbled. Brody didn't know how long he had been strapped to the cold metal table alongside his brother, but it had been long enough for him to start to think he'd never get off of it. "Bucky," he mumbled wearily as he tried to look around."Bucky? Brody? Oh, my God." The said boy almost flinched at his name, trying to look around.
"Get Brody. Get Brody first." He could faintly hear his brother's voice.
"Hey Brody," the Barnes looked up seeing a blond man hovering over him.
"No way," the boy coughed lightly as a grin spread on his face. "Is that you Rogers?" A sense of relief flooded over the younger Barnes as Steve removed his restraints.
"In the flesh Jace." Brody let out a slight groan at the nickname he had been given. Brody had always begged to go by his middle name, which was a wish most respected, but Steve could never resist teasing the boy.
"Bucky." As the haziness wore off, Brody seemed to remember his brother had gone through the torment as well, jumping up from the table in a hurry. Both men rushed to Bucky's side tearing off the restraints as fast as they could.
"I thought you guys were dead," Steve grunted as he and Brody held up Bucky.
"I thought you were smaller," Bucky mumbled with a lazy grin.
Brody looked the blond up and down, suddenly realizing what Bucky was talking about. Instead of the once scrawny boy that the Barnes brothers were familiar with, now Steve had gotten bigger. Now he seemed to be a few inches taller than Brody, matching Bucky in height, and filled out as well too. "What happened to you?"
"I joined the army."
"Did it hurt?" Bucky asked as they made their way through the compound, pushing off Steve to try and stand on his own.
"A little."
"Is it permanent?" Bucky pushed.
"So far."
"Can we talk about this after we get out of here?" Brody asked, breathing heavily. Being strapped down for so long had left a ball of nerves in the boy's chest, wanting to escape more than ever and get to safety. Suddenly bombs began to go off as the three raced through the facility.
The loud sounds made Brody flinch, biting down on his cheek as he followed closely behind Bucky. Things were still moving far too fast for the youngest Barnes, still trying to make sense of what was going on at the moment.
"Captain America," the boys heads all snapped up to see Johann Schmidt and the scientist that had been torturing the brothers standing on the other side of the metal platform. The facility was made up of stairs and catwalks to overlook the work going on. "I am a great fan of your films," Schmidt continued to yell over the sound of the bombs. "So Dr. Erskine managed it after all. Not exactly an improvement, but still impressive."
Bucky and Brody watched the exchange in confusion, leaning against each other to try and stay upright as Steve and Schmidt walked across the platform. As soon as the two men were facing off Steve sent a quick punch to Schmidt's jaw.
"You've got no idea."
"Haven't I?" Schmidt gave a hard punch to Steve's shield, leaving a fist print inside the metal. The German then slammed his fist into Steve's jaw sending the solider flying onto his back.
"Don't," Bucky grabbed onto his brother's arm as he tried to rush to Steve's aid. "You can barely walk."
"He can't do this on his own, he's going to get hurt." Brody watched as the nerves in his chest continued to grow, wanting nothing more than to rush to Steve's side and help him.
"Maybe then. But not anymore." Steve suddenly flipped off his back, kicking Schmidt in the chest. Dr. Zola quickly rushed over and pulled a switch, the two sides of the platform moving away from each other as it separated the men.
"No matter what lies Erskine told you, you see I was his greatest success." Brody watched in horror as Schmidt pulled off his skin, having nothing but a red skull for a face. The sight made the Barnes boy feel sick, the man looking just as monstrous as he truly was.
"You don't have one of those do you?" Bucky rose an eyebrow to Steve, Brody rolling his eyes at the exchange.
"Is this really the time?"
"I didn't know getting taken hostage would take away your sense of humor, kid." Bucky grinned widely at his brother's annoyed expression.
"You are deluded, Captain. You pretend to be a simple soldier, but in reality you are just afraid to admit that we have left humanity behind. Unlike you, I embrace it proudly. Without fear." Schmidt and Zola slowly moved toward the elevator as he shouted over the explosions.
"Then how come you're running?" Steve shouted back as the elevator doors closed.
"Steve," the blond turned to Brody hearing his labored breath. "We have to get out of here."
"Come on. Let's go up," Steve ushered his friends up the stairs as the explosions continued to echo throughout the building.
Steve led the Barnes' to the railing, a slim metal beam leading across to an exit. "One at a time," Steve mumbled as he helped the brothers over the railing.Bucky slowly moved across, trying his hardest not to look down at the chaos.
"You got it Buck." Brody reassured his brother, following close behind. Suddenly a loud creak echoed through Brody's ears. "Bucky get off now!" The boy shouted, both brothers jumping to the railing as the beam collapsed.
"There's got to be a rope or something," Bucky shouted to Steve.
"Just go. Get out of here!" Steve yelled back to them.
"No! Not without you." Brody could hear his brother's determination, neither of them were willing to leave without Steve.
"We're not leaving you again, Steve."
With that Steve bent the broken railing, leaving a wide gap between the bars. Brody's eyes widened as he watched the solider move backward, realizing what the blond was about to do.
And without another thought Steve took off running, leaping across to the opposite side of the railing.
"That was insane," Brody grinned up at Steve as they continued their walk back to base. "Seriously Steve, I mean," a laugh escaped the blue eyed boy. "That was amazing."
Steve smiled as well, nodding his head,
"I guess it was.""Thanks for," he sighed lightly. "Thanks for saving me and Bucky. I don't know how much longer I would've lasted in there." A sad laugh escaped Brody as he tried to ignore how heavy the situation actually was.
"You would've done the same for me." Steve told the boy seriously, resting a hand on his shoulder as they continued to walk.
As the herd of soldiers made their way back into the camp, the soldiers all began to cheer. Steve had single handedly rescued all of the one-o-seven soldiers that hadn't been killed. Brody couldn't help but smile, lightly shoving the blond.
"Lighten up, Cap. You're a war hero." The group of soldiers came to a stop as they approached Colonel Phillips, the man having an odd look on his face.
"Some of these men are in need of medical attention." Steve told him, knowing he had most likely upset the Colonel. "I'd like to surrender myself for disciplinary action."
The Colonel was quiet, looking to all the men Steve had saved. "That won't be necessary."
"Yes sir." Bucky and Brody shared a wide grin, the elder Barnes slapping Steve on the back.
"Let's hear it for Captain America."
