The Key To My Heart - Part 1

Cyrus POV

One thing I had always been proud of, was my ability to talk to anyone. Even if they had been mean to me in the past, I was able to become friends with them for some reason or another.

Being shy, it was also a big surprise when TJ spoke to me. He seemed to be reluctant to talk to anyone else, for any reason.

I saw him practising his basketball skills during lunch. It was something he always did, so I decided to talk to him, which meant that I would not be spending time with the Good Hair Crew.

"Where are you going?" Andi wondered.

"Aren't you going to eat with us?" Buffy added.

"Um, nah" I responded "I've gotta go and talk to TJ"

I was about to leave when Jonah grabbed my arm. It wasn't very forceful, but it did make an impression.

"But why?" Jonah posed.

"Because he has no one to talk to" I explained "And now I need to speak to him"

"Next you'll be saying that you're gay for each other" Jonah chuckled.

It wasn't what he said, but the fact that Jonah chuckled, that bothered me. Clearly I didn't know him like I thought I did.

"If that's your attitude, I'm glad I'm not staying to have lunch with you" I commented, taking the moral high ground.

He looked shocked when I replied, but I didn't care. He knew I was gay, and it wasn't like I had a crush on Jonah any more anyway, so I had no problem in leaving him where he was.

As I approached the field, I saw TJ score, and he was looking more determined than I've ever seen him.

"Wow, you killed it Teej" I complimented.

"Thanks muffin" he responded, walking over to me.

He gave me a hug, which was somewhat uncharacteristic of him, but I appreciated the gesture, as I knew he would not give anyone else cuddles.

"So, how's practice going?" I asked "It sure looked good from where I was"

"Pretty well actually" he answered "I'm so ready for the next game"

"Cool, so um... I was wondering" I began "Would you maybe, want to hang out with me after school?"

"Sure, that would be great" he agreed.

I let out a sigh of relief, and felt my heart flutter at the idea of spending time with TJ. I couldn't wait for school to be over so I could hang out with him.

I returned to where the Good Hair Crew were sat, and I was hesitant about talking to them. But then Andi waved at me, so I felt like I had to.

"So, is TJ okay? Andi enquired.

"Yes, he's all good" I confirmed "Gonna hang out with him after school"

"That'll be nice" Buffy muttered.

As I was about to answer, I noticed that Jonah was nowhere to be seen. I was concerned, but at the same time, I was relieved, considering how he mocked me.

"Where's Jonah?" I wondered.

"He went to his locker" Andi replied.

"Why?" I continued.

"He needed to get something" Buffy retorted.

I decided to walk over to Jonah's locker and calmly confront him about what he said. My feelings were not going to be hurt, I would make sure of that.

"So, what's going on with you?" I asked.

"Nothing, why?" he responded.

"You laughed at the idea of TJ and I going out" I answered "And that upsets me"

"I didn't mean for it to come out like that" he rejoined.

"In the same way you wish I never came out?" I challenged.

I could see his face look more and more terrified as I continued, but by this time, I wasn't really caring for him.

"Why do you think that?" he countered "I'm happy that you came out and are able to live openly and happily"

"But you made me really sad by laughing" I mumbled "I thought we were friends"

"We are, I suppose I was jealous" he claimed "That you wouldn't have time for me once you find a boyfriend"

He looked genuinely hurt by that thought, and I began to understand what was going on. I just had to work out what to say.

"That won't happen" I pledged "If I ever find someone, they may be my boyfriend, but you'll always be my best friend.

"You mean that?" he whispered.

"Of course" I assured.

I gave him a quick hug before we headed back to the girls to enjoy our lunch. It passed all too quickly and we were back in class too soon.

When school finished, I walked to the entrance and TJ was waiting for me. I smiled and hoped that we would be even closer.
