After holding court for the whole day Eleanor was beyond tired, and even though she had a whole kingdom to run on her she still enjoyed it. The humans loved and adored her, something Henry never did. The thought of him caused bile to rise in her throat. How can someone claim to love her and then treat her like he treated her? She didn’t understand it. She was pulled from her depressing thoughts when her personal guard, Finn, stepped inside the room. He was here to escort her to her room or dining room which ever she chose. Seeing him made her heart skip a beat. There was just something about him. She met him a few months before she was married to Henry in one of the human villages. He was sweet and charming and she couldn’t help but fall in love with him. But then the news came that she would have to marry Henry and she was overwhelmed with pain. She didn’t love Henry. To top everything off, she soon found out that Finn was one of Henry’s knights. And when Henry found out about them, he decided to be extra cruel and made Finn her personal guard. A way of saying: ‘you can look, but you can’t touch’.
Finn was kind towards her, but not like he was when she first met him. He was holding back and she knew she hurt him terribly when she married Henry in front of him and there was nothing either of them could do.
“Where to, your highness?” Finn asked diplomatically – like a regal knight and not a friend or the man she loved. It hurt when he acted this way, she tried to explain everything to him, but he was to hurt to listen to her. Were they ever going to go back to the way they were?
“My chambers,” She said softly, scared that her voice might break. She was on the verge of crying, she loved Finn, but there was no way to tell him. He only saw her as his queen.
Once she was left alone in her chamber she lay down on her bed and thought about what her life was coming to. Her chambers were the ones she shared with Henry. When she couldn’t sleep she decided to get rid of the few items that belonged to Henry. As she was going through a box she came across an old looking diary and her curiosity got the best of her. Eleanor read the whole diary within record breaking time. It was the diary of the king’s brother’s wife.
Her husband was jealous of his brother, the king, and wanted his own son to rule the kingdom. So he forced her to swap their son, Luke, with the king’s son Henry. Luke changed to Henry, and her husband forced her to kill the rightful heir to the throne; the real Henry. But she couldn’t so she snuck out one night and left the baby in front of a cabin in the woods. Eleanor was shocked. So her Henry was actually Luke and not the rightful heir to the throne. She knew that she had to find the true heir to the throne. Luckily the diary contained the location of the cabin, a final effort of the woman to ensure the true heir will find his way home.
Even though it was late she needed to find the truth now. She dressed quickly before she snuck out of her room and made her way downstairs. She was almost at the bottom when Finn spotted her.
“Where do you think you’re going?” He asked as he approached her.
“I need to go somewhere,” She said vaguely and urgently; she had no time to explain.
“Not alone, you’re not,” he might act like he didn’t care anymore, but he still loved her.
She agreed and they made their way to the cabin described by the diary. Once they reached the cabin Eleanor immediately recognised it. When she and Finn met he brought her here to meet his mother, Carling, this was his mother’s cabin. Eleanor couldn’t believe her luck. Finn was unsure why they were at his childhood home but knocked anyway.
When Carling opened the door she gave them both a knowing look before inviting them in. Eleanor told them about the diary she discovered before Carling told them, her side of the story. Finn was shocked to find out that he was the rightful heir and once Eleanor told them about how Henry forced her to marry him by threatening her brother’s life, Finn regretted the way he treated Eleanor because of jealousy.
“I guess we should tell the people and I have to resign as queen,” Eleanor said but Finn jumped off his seat and kneeled in front of her, taking her hands in his.
“No, I will only agree to be king if you promise to be my queen. I’m sorry Eleanor, I treated you horribly out of pure jealousy and I was stupid for doing that. I love you, I’ve always loved. If you can forgive me, would you do me the honour of becoming my wife?” Eleanor was shocked but answered without any contemplation, “Yes.”
Even though they were both deceived by appearances, their love for each other came out stronger.
