A new frien named AmuPshyeahVanity gave me two requests! I'm so heccin happy! I love Hubert and he's just a good, well rounded character. I wish he had eyebrows tho....

STORYTIME!

You sighed and walked along the Goddess Tower, tracing your fingertips on the stone. The war was won, but st such a heavy cost. Dimitri has fallen, Rhea has fallen, even Claude has fallen to your own commanding orders. Each of those lives were necessary to the victory of the Empire, however that doesn't mean the deaths do not weigh on you. But now you must learn to move forward and helped build Fódlan to match the brightness of the new dawn! But such a task... you need a break before you can tackle the war of politics and diplomacy. And... how you're going to deal with what comes after that.

"There you are. You left the rest of us to deal with the aftermath while you enjoy a moment of solitude here, hmm? I will not allow it."

"Oh? Hey Hubert. Sorry. I know Edelgard must be looking for me. I'll be sure to return to-"

"You misunderstand. You jump to conclusions far too quickly, just like always. I suppose that personality trait will always stick with you. I also don't want to deal with the pesky aftermath just yet. That last battle simply has put too much stress on both Lady Edelgard and I. Apparently you as well. As much as I hate to admit it... I wanted some company and I knew you'd be here. You've been obsessed with the legend of this damned tower ever since Dorothea told you about it. So I cannot allow you to be here in solitude. Understand now?"

That's very out of character for him. Hubert wanted company? And it wasn't Edelgard? How peculiar. This was soemthing that you found quite interesting. You fumbled with the ring in your pocket. You know exactly what you mean by after all the politics and diplomacy. Who you're going to soemd your life with, what you're going to do, if you're going to die alone or not. This is a valid thing to be insecure about, but you can set that aside and hold a conversation with Hubert for a while. Why not?

"Yeah I understand. But for some reason I feel like you're here for a reason more than you just wanted to be in my company. You're the kind of man to have a motive for every action you do, otherwise you'd tell whoever gave you the idea to do the thing to fuck off."

"I would never use such crude language."

"Around Edelgard you wouldn't. I've heard you countless times tell Ferdinand to fuck off."

"Regardless of that... tangent... You are absolutely right. I happened to come here for a reason. I was hoping my little excuse would be enough to trick you. Alas, I'm wrong... Goddess Damnit. Here I thought I'd be able to do this but here I am, choking up on my own words like an imbecile!"

Hubert scowled and began fishing in his pocket for something, clearly frustrated at the situation he put himself in. Was he looking for something? It was probably something you needed to look over like a parchment with surrender conditions or a treat with the remaining Alliance Nobles or something political and diplomatic like that. Well, what he did end up fishing out of his pocket did have a little bit to do with stuff like that I guess. Your jaw dropped and your face went entirely red when you saw Hubert pull out a flower, Your favorite in fact, colored a vibrant crimson red.

Hubert walked up to you, biting his tongue and refusing to say a word until he did whatever he wanted to do with that flower. He took the bloom and brushed some hair back behind your ear, placing the flower's shortened stem in the strand to keep it from moving from the place. Your heart was beating so fast and you gripped the ring in the park of your hand. You looked up at Hubert, waiting for the mysterious man to say anything. He let out a deep exhale, as of preparing himself for something he obviously had planned on doing.

"There. I have no means of telling you pretty lies or poetic language but that gesture should tell you what you need to know."

"Hubert.. You have romantic feelings towards me?"

"Don't say it as bluntly as that! It's... humiliating... But yes, I do. And don't worry, I had already asked for Lady Edelgard's Blessing. There is no one she would rather see me happy with than you, and vice versa. So if you'll have me, I want to be a good husband for you. I want you to be my wife. Until death do we part."

You bit your tongue to prevent yourself from squealing like a pig. No way! No way no way no way! You decide to have some fun with this. You opened your hand and got on your knee so suddenly you almost dragged Hubert down with you. You revealed the ring and began reciting some wedding vows from some poem within a novel that you adored as a child. It was a gift from some merchants you and Jeralt saved way back when you were still a mercenary. That doesn't matter, what matters is the meaning behind the words.

"With this hand,  will light your candle. Your cup will never be empty, for I will be your wine. With this candle, I shall light your way in darkness. With this ring, I ask you to be mine."

"Was that your proposal? Did you just propose after I just had?"

"Yes I just did! Hubert, you have no idea how happy I am in this moment. You have no idea how worried I was that I was going to be alone. But you're here! You're here and you want to be my husband and I want to be your wife and we're here in the Goddess Tower. Hubert... You're not lying right? You actually want to be with me like you said? 'Til Death Do We Part?"

Hubert enveloped you with his embrace. He was skinny and very bony, but he still emulated a great warmth to you. Oh wow, we're you actually crying? Yeah, you were crying some happy tears into his shoulders. You held onto him as tight as you could. You weren't going to be alone! You had Hubert and oh Goddess he was everything you needed. Hubert was smart, he was dependable, he was mysterious, and he was here. He could share the burdens, share the pain, share the laughter, share the love, and share the life. There was so many emotions running through your brain you had no idea how to process it all.

Hubert let you go, letting yourself look at his face. He was.. concerned. Your eyes must be red and your cheeks wet. He placed his slender hand against your cheek. His hand was cold, but his embrace wasn't. Back track to the concerned part. You have never seen Hubert show the littlest bit of emotion towards someone that wasn't fueled with rage except Edelgard. Then his posture seemed to slouch. No, he didn't slouch. He was just closer. His eyes closed and so did yours. The space between you both became nonexistent.

And you kissed.

His lips met yours and they shared a dance. You felt so warm, so loved, and so validated in this moment. Alas, warmth was always fleeting and you both pulled away. The kiss was innocent, Virgin, and not given a bit of tongue. It was a pure kiss to show love, not lust. You saw the light in his eyes, and the light was in yours. The pace of your breathing was matched. It was as if two destined soulmates have finally connected the dots. The gears of fate were turning and the shadows were shifting in the background. Hubert smiled, you smiled, and you both stood there frozen in time. Wow... you lifted your hand and entwined the fingers with his.

"With this hand, I'll light your way through darkness. Your cup will never be empty, for I will be your wine."

He nodded, understanding you were reciting the poem again. He took over this time, using his dominant hand with the ring on his finger to do the sameness action you had just done.

"With this candle, I shall light your way through darkness. With this ring, our partnership will bind."

"You tried."

"Oh you hush."

You chuckled at his slight embarassment. He tried his best to recite the lines from memory after only hearing it once. You leaned forward on your tippie toes to press a quick kiss to the tip of his nose, showing more affection to your newfound fiancé. It's probably time to leave this old tower anyways. You had jobs to do: politics and diplomacy. You had to rebuild the world for Fódlan's New Dawn. But together. And you don't need to worry about what comes after the politics and diplomacy. Because you have Hubert. And everything is going to be okay.

Everything is going to be okay.
