A Talk

I sat in my lions pilot seat, unable to do anything about my racing mind but stare into space. I sighed, letting my head fall back on the seat's headrest. I know I'd told everyone else to sleep so we would be at the top of our game tomorrow, but when my mind kept me up like this, I could never get a wink of snooze time.

A voice interrupted my thoughts. "You OK?"

I nearly launched myself out of the seat, again. "Holy Sh- Kendall! Don't scare me like that!"

"Sorry," her voice crackled on the comms. "Can't sleep either?"

"Yeah.............." I said without much enthusiasm.

"Why not?" Kendall asked.

"I just.......I'm really worried about my parents. You know how protective my Dad is, and........... I did yell at Mom the other day. If something happened to her before I got the chance to apologize-"

"Don't say that!" Kendall scolded, "I know your mom almost as well as you, and she's tough. Probably the toughest person on the Atlas. If something did happen, I promise, she'll be fine."

I smiled a small smile. "Thanks Kendall. You're the best."

"Aren't I always?"

We sat in silence for about a minute before Kendall asked, "There's something else isn't there?"

"No," I said quickly, because she was right. There was something else.

I could hear Kendall raise an eyebrow. "You sure?"

I didn't say a word. On the other end of the line, I heard Kendall get up and move somewhere. A minute later, she burst through the Black Lion's cockpit doors. She crouched in front of me, and grabbed my shoulders. "Spill."

"Spill what?" I cried.

"It's a boy Sky. I know it is. Now spill it, spill everything!"

I sighed. There was no way I could keep it from her, she'd find out one way or another. So I told her about the few minutes I had spent with Edar the night before.

When I had finished my story, Kendall was grinning like an idiot. "That is the most adorable thing I have ever heard."

"Come on, Kendall!" I groaned, "We're just friends, it's not like that!"

She raised an eyebrow. "That's what they all say..............."

I felt my face get hot again and I buried it in my hands. "Kendall, please..........."

"What is your problem?!" she cried, "You two are obviously head over heels for each other, AND he's perfect for you!"

"Perfect huh?" I said, "How so?"

Asking was a huge mistake. Kendall might as well have turned on a debriefing screen and pulled up a powerpoint with a hundred slides. No escaping now.

"Ok, for one," She started, "You need a good listener that you can vent to. From what you told me, Edar is the best at this. He's patient, won't interrupt you........... Two, you need someone to rely on for support and motivation. Again, Edar is best at it........... Three.........."

I don't know how long my bestie went on, but there's something you should know while she's lecturing me on relationships. Kendall is a great and caring friend, but sometimes a little too caring. She cares so much about me I would go as far to say that there is not a thing in the universe she wouldn't do for me.

I'm not saying that's bad, Kendall is an amazing friend to have and great to be around. Which is good a lot of the time because of my *ahem* leg's condition, but sometimes she's caring so much about me that Kendall forgets about her own safety. Also, her protectiveness got her on quite a few mean kid's bad sides, along with me, on several occasions when we were kids.

Aw, quiznack, I shouldn't have talked about that, now I'm getting a flashback. Sorry 'bout that folks, here we go..............

Five years earlier:

"Sky," Shay said as she helped me up, "You better tell your parents about this. They could help!"

"No," I said as Jexton and his buddies walked away, "They have enough to worry about at the moment. They don't need to worry about some boys too."

I watched as Kendall tried to chase after the boys, even though they had punched her three or four times. Karter and Max were holding her back.

A few minutes earlier, we had been minding our own business in the MFE hangar when Jexton Griffin and his two buddies came up to us. They had pushed me down, said some mean things about my bad leg, called me a few names having to do with that leg.

Then Kendall got mad and stormed in between me and the three boys, telling them to back off and leave her friend alone. The bullies turned on Kendall, and started shoving her around for being part Galra.

When one of them pushed her too hard, I jumped to my feet. "HEY! LEAVE HER ALONE!"

That's when the punching started. Jexton landed the first one square in my face. I hit the ground again, my nose on fire and my eyes watering. I reached up to feel the damage with my hand as Kendall, her skin purple now, launched herself at the three boys. My hand jumped back as the pain in my nose fired, and came back bloody. Max and Alyssa held her back as the boys laughed.

I stood up to help Kendall, but one of the boys kicked me in the gut and I was on the floor again, this time doubled over in pain.

Then Karter, Shay, and Alyssa surrounded the boys, and told them about how much stronger they were with their Galra and Altean blood. That scared them off real fast. Jexton couldn't help but fire one last snide comment towards me and my bad leg as he left.

The last comment sent Kendall over the edge and let her dangle. Her skin was fully purple and eyes glowing bright yellow. She roared and tried to tackle Jexton, yelling mean comments of her own after him. Something about him being a pig-faced jerk.

Now I was on my feet again, and Kendall rushed over to me, pulling one of my arms over her shoulder.

My friends tried to persuade me into telling my parents that I was getting picked on for my bad leg that day. Later that week, I ran into Kendall and my friends telling their parents and mine about the bullying I was getting for my bad leg. At first, I was mad at my friends, Kendall especially, since she was leading the whole operation, but after seeing the service she had done for me, I forgave her, and we were back to being besties.

I guess that's why instead of trying to find an excuse to get away or send Kendall back to her lion, I just laughed inside and let her rant about my so-called "relationship" with Edar. Finally, we were both too tired to even keep our eyes open, and went back to bed.
