Lunch Break

We were lost, everyone was arguing. Mostly over directions, sometimes over stupid things. I decided that everyone needed a break and that a short pit stop would be a good idea.

We found a small, light brown and green moon with breathable air, and set our lions down. The Whokian's had sent us with some food, and Shay used them to make an awesome lunch for us. We sat down on a few logs at the edge of a forest outside our lions, and ate the burritos and sandwiches Shay made us.

"How's yours?" I said to Kendall after taking another bite of burrito.

"It's good," she told me, "The sausages were a great addition."

"What sausages?" I asked.

Kendall looked at me. "Yours doesn't have sausages?! Let me take a bite and see."

I held out my burrito for her, she took a bite and shook her head. "Yeah, there's no sausages in there."

"Why didn't mine get sausages?!" My voice cracked a little, unfortunately. "Lemmie taste yours." She let me have a bite, and hers was way better. "Man," I muttered, "Mine really needs sausages."

Kendall nodded. "Yes, it does."

About a minute later, she said, "Hey, what if we had a kid? Like, a boy and a girl, maybe."

I tilted my head. "Aww, that'd be cute. We'd name the boy Seth." Kendall nodded as I continued. "And the girl.......What would we name the girl?"

"Hmmm," Kendall said, "Marina's a cute name."

I raised a brow. "Marina? Like Marina del Rey?"

Kendall shrugged. "Not who I was thinking of, but yeah."

"I always liked Grace or Jessie for a girl," I said and took another bite of my sad burrito.

I heard snickers and giggles from the others.

"What?!" Kendall and I said in unison.

Alyssa grinned. "When's the wedding?"

Kendall and both exclaimed a bunch of "No!"s, and how we were not a couple, just friends, why would you think that? sort of thing.

Everyone's outbursts died down, and Kendall said, "But hey, if neither of us is married by the time we're 45, we marry each other. Got it?"

"Deal," I said, and we shook hands before going back to the burritos.

"You'd make a good wife," I told Kendall a few bites later.

"Yeah I would," She agreed, "A hot mess like you could use an organized spouse like me."

My jaw dropped. "I am not a hot mess."

"Yes you are," Kendall argued, "And you know it."

"I am not a hot mess!" I repeated. I turned to my friends. "Guys, tell Kendall that I'm not a hot mess."

They had mixed reactions of cringes, "Weeeell......"s, "ehhhhh" hand signs, and awkward shrugs.

"I mean," Alyssa said, "You do show up late to everything when Kendall isn't there."

"Yeah," Max agreed, "Remember the time that all the main power on the Atlas went out, and when it came back on, all the clocks were behind an hour, so you showed up to training an hour late the next day, still in your PJs cause you forgot to reset your alarm clock?"

"That was one time!" I protested.

"There was also the time you came half an hour late to our big sleepover 'cause you forgot and took a forty-minute shower," Karter said reluctantly.

"And," Shay added timidly, "There's also the Noodle Incident.........."

"The Noddle Incident wasn't my fault!" I cried.

"Uhhh," Shay said as she folded her hands nervously, "It kinda was."

"Wait," Alyssa interjected, "What's the Noodle Incident?"

Shay opened her mouth to answer, but I cut her off. "Nothing," I said through clenched teeth, choosing my words carefully, "Just a little episode where my forgetfulness and sleepiness made a big mess." I looked directly at her, trying to send a message. "We don't talk about it, because it isn't that big of a deal."

Kendall said, "Either way, you're the Hot Mess of the group."

I looked at her in disbelief. "I'm a Hot Mess?.........."

"Yeah," Kendall said. She patted my knee. "Sorry you had to find out this way."

"I'm the Hot Mess of our friend group," I sadly admitted.

"It's OK," Kendal put her arm around my shoulders, "Your awesome leadership and being a great friend makes up for it."

The others nodded and Yes-ed in agreement.

I smiled slightly at their kindness, my mood returning to content in that moment.

A few minutes later, it was time to go. "Alright guys!" I clapped my hands, "That's it for lunch break. Let's load up and hit the road!"
