CHAPTER TEN
x. spears are good for subtraction
_______Sebastian missed his bed. Usually he enjoyed sleeping, but doing so in a cage was beginning to change his mind. He'd hoped that it would take his mind off the pain for a little while, but even in his dreams, he was on fire.
He only woke up from this nightmare when there was a loud explosion. His eyes shot open to see that the boxes of jewellery outside the cages had dispersed at random into a tidal wave, knocking over two of the guards and washing them right over the railing. If it was Sebastian, he would've happily let them fall to their deaths but Hazel Levesque was much more merciful. A few hundred bracelets leapt at the guards and lashed around their ankles, leaving them hanging upside down from the bottom of the catwalk, screaming.
Hazel turned toward the third guard. She broke her bonds easily and picked up one of the fallen guards' spears.
"Should I kill you from here?" Hazel snarled. "Or are you going to make me come over there?"
The guard turned and ran.
Hazel shouted over the side to the other two. "Amazon cards! Pass them up, unless you want me to undo those friendship bracelets and let you drop!"
Four and a half seconds later, Hazel had two Amazon cards. She raced over to the cages and swiped a card. The doors popped open.
Frank stared at her in astonishment. "Hazel, that was... amazing."
Percy nodded. "I will never wear jewellery again."
"Except this." Hazel tossed him his necklace. "Our weapons and supplies are at the end of the catwalk. We should hurry. Pretty soon-"
Alarms began wailing throughout the cavern.
"Yeah," she said, "that'll happen. Let's go!"
Sebastian was the only one who didn't race out of his cell. He was too weak to even stand. The vervain was getting the better of him. Soon enough he'd be as good as a corpse. But Percy had gone straight into Sebastian's cell and hauled him to his fault, letting the vampire lean on him, returning the favour from when they met Iris.
The first part of the escape was easy. They retrieved their things with no problem, then started climbing down the ladder. Sebastian had pretty much dropped down it, but he'd heal quickly once he got blood. Every time Amazons swarmed beneath them, demanding their surrender, Hazel made a crate of jewellery explode, burying their enemies in a Niagara Falls of gold and silver. When they got to the bottom of the ladder, they found a scene that looked like Mardi Gras Armageddon - Amazons trapped up to their necks in bead necklaces, several more upside down in a mountain of amethyst earrings, and a battle forklift buried in silver charm bracelets.
"You, Hazel Levesque," Frank said, "are entirely freaking incredible."
They ran back to the throne room. They stumbled across one Amazon who turned away from them like they were invisible. Sebastian presumed Hazel had made a deal with Hylla.
