CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
xxiv. wouldn't dream of it
_______

It had been a while since Sebastian had dreamt in his sleep. He never had such vivid dreams since he died. Demigods had important dreams all the time, but Sebastian seemed to have lost that when he became more monster than hero.

Yet, as he slept in his cabin that night, he dreamt so vividly he almost thought it was real. It was just like when he was in the bog and Gaea forced him into a flashback. Except this time he wasn't remembering Henry.

Sebastian Rais decided that he loved France. Though the king, Louis VI was a horrible ruler - far too greedy and ambitious, regularly attacking his own subjects to gain more wealth - Sebastian found himself having the time of his life.

He was lucky enough to have been given shelter by a generous family. The LeBeau's. They were a family of blacksmiths and earned a decent amount of money for their craft. Sebastian had no need for money, and worked for free in the shop with them as a thank you for letting him stay in their home.

Well, that was one of the reasons. The other was that he got to spend time with Carix. The LeBeau's were wealthy enough to have a moderately sized home but it was still a bit of a tight squeeze fighting all of their five children in the bedrooms. They'd ended up paying for an extension to make an extra room. Now, they had four bedrooms in the house. One for the adults and three between the children. Being the oldest, Carix got his own room, which was also why Sebastian stayed their with him during his visit.

At first, Carix hadn't been over the moon about it but over the past four years, their relationship had grown. They fell in love, simple as that.

Sebastian hadn't been with a man since Gaius. Back then it was much more acceptable to be with someone of the same gender, as long as you still married correctly so you could have children (not that either Sebastian or Gaius did, but Gaius did have some leeway, being emperor and all). Now, since the rise of Christianity and many kingdom's devotion to it, being homosexual was seen as a sin. Carix could be killed if anyone found out about his relationship with Sebastian.

That made Sebastian hesitant to chase these feelings but, at the end of the day, Carix could make his own decisions. If he wanted to risk his life for love, who was Sebastian to stop him? Perhaps it was a little selfish. At least they were careful; never showing affection in public, only behind closed doors.

They'd pushed the single beds of the room together a while ago. No one in the house questioned it. They didn't dare speak of it, but they didn't mind. And Sebastian would gladly suffer their wrath just to wake up next to Carix.

However, Carix was nowhere to be seen when Sebastian woke up that winter morning. Though he had left behind a note, stuck to the wall from a mixture of flour and water - which was apparently quite sticky. What made Sebastian chuckle was that the note was directly under the dent the two had accidentally made in the wall a few nights ago.
