The next day Harry was called to Dr. Payne's office. Harry felt nervous and excited at the same time. He took a deep, calming breath and knocked on the door. A "come in" sounded and Harry opened the door. Dr. Payne got up from his chair behind his desk and shook his hand before he motioned for Harry to take a seat.
"Good morning Harry, how are you feeling today?" Dr. Payne asked with a smile.
"Good. Excited." Harry grinned back.
Dr. Payne gave him a pensive look.
"Harry, I don't want you to get your hopes up. I agreed to this to help you come to terms with your illness."
Oh. Okay. Well, they just had to see about that. Harry stayed quiet.
Dr. Payne sighed but continued.
"I have booked an MRI and were also doing an EEG. But I'll start with a basic neurological examination. You can sit over here on the examining table."
Harry complied and Dr. Payne proceeded to examine him.
"How often do you have these episodes?"
"It varies. Usually a couple of times a day but just for a few seconds each. " Harry answered.
Dr. Payne made notes.
"How does it affect you? Walk me through one of these episodes."
Harry scratched his chin.
"I like, freeze and blank out. I just stare at nothing. I'm totally absent and I don't hear when someone talks to me. Or so I've been told at least. I don't remember afterward. It just feels like I forgot what I was doing or talking about." Harry tried to explain.
Dr. Payne wrote his explanation down.
"Okay. Let's start with an EEG. We'll do that tomorrow morning and you can't sleep tonight. Okay? You'll have to be awake. Can you do that?"
"Of course." Harry nodded.
"Good. See you at 7 a.m. tomorrow then."
Louis met him with a smile on his face as soon as he came back.
"So?"
Harry smiled back. Louis's smile was contagious.
"Dr. Payne did a neurological exam and asked me some questions. I'm gonna do an EEG tomorrow morning so I have to stay up all night. He has booked an MRI as well." Harry beamed.
"Yeah? That's so great Harry." Louis smiled fondly.
A tired Harry walked over to Dr. Payne's office the next morning. He had managed to stay awake the whole night. There was no way he was gonna mess this up. He'd waited four years for someone to listen to him and take him seriously. Who could imagine it would be a beautiful blue-eyed man who finally would step up to the challenge? The butterflies started just from the thought of Louis. Harry shook his head in amusement. He got it bad! He never thought he would actually fall in love with someone. It wasn't in the cards for him. Especially not in here! He never thought someone would love him back but he could almost believe it. Almost. He didn't understand what Louis possibly could see in him.
Dr. Payne greeted him friendly and motioned for him to lay down on the examination table. He put electrodes on Harry's head and connected them to a monitor.
"Okay, Harry. This will take two hours. I want you to stay awake for the first hour and sleep the rest of the time. We can make small talk to make sure you don't fall asleep. Just relax." Dr. Payne explained.
For the first half-hour, they talked about different topics. Family, studies, and music. Dr. Payne was a huge music lover as well. Harry was ranting on about his favorite band when he suddenly froze mid-sentence.
"Harry?" Dr. Payne asked with furrowed eyebrows but didn't get a response. The monitor started beeping and he looked up. No way! He stared at the screen. It showed an abnormal EEG-pattern.
"Where was I?" Harry mumbled.
"How are you feeling Harry?" Dr. Payne asked without looking away from the monitor.
"Disoriented." Harry answered.
"You can try and fall asleep." Dr. Payne replied.
"Okay. Thank you." Harry mumbled politely.
Liam watched the monitor closely as Harry fell asleep. Nothing happened at first but after 20 minutes the electronic impulses in Harry's brain changed again. Liam couldn't believe it. This was definitely not Borderline. This was something neurological. But he had to run some more tests to determent what exactly. There was still a chance that this was psychological, the brain acted like this during a panic attack as well. But Harry didn't have a panic attack so that didn't make sense. He had to wait for the brain scan.
His eyes fell on the sleeping boy and he felt bad. No one had ever questioned the previous doctor. No one had made sure it wasn't something physical. Harry had lost four years of his life locked inside a mental institution for something that looked like it could be a form of epilepsy.
Liam woke the boy up after the EEG was finished and informed him they were going to the hospital the next day to do an MRI. He didn't want to give him false hope so he didn't inform him of his findings. He wanted to be sure and also confirm it with a neurologist. This wasn't his specialty.
The next day Liam and Louis escorted Harry to the nearest hospital. Harry was like a child at Christmas. This was the first time he went outside the ward in four years. It didn't matter that he was locked inside a car most of the short ride to the Hospital. He had his nose pressed against the window for the whole time, making excited shout-outs of the things he saw. His face had a smile plastered on it the entire time. Liam and Louis exchanged a look. They were both really moved from the sight of the beautiful young man's excitement from something they both took for granted.
Louis and Liam waited outside while Harry did the x-ray. When he was finished Liam went to talk to the neurologist in charge. Harry sat down beside Louis.
"How are you?" Louis asked and looked at Harry.
"Nervous. A bit overwhelmed. Glad I finally got to do this. Scared." Harry answered with a shaky breath.
"I'm here for you. No matter what." Louis answered.
"That means the world to me." Harry whispered with glossy eyes.
