Reader's P.O.V
Did you ever make a mistake so bad it ended up on the news? Because I sure know I did.
People nowadays love clawing for gossip. So much so that one affair is all it takes to make them go crazy. And yes, unfortunately, I was involved in this week's celebrity sex scandal. And not just any old celebrity. How about... the king of Hell himself?
Long story, really.
I was at the Happy Hotel, having a chat with Angel Dust at the bar. He was playfully flirting with Husk, who looked just about ready to jam a kitchen knife into his eye socket, and I was laughing hysterically. Niffty was sweeping the floor around us and scolding me loudly every time I spilled even a drop of alcohol on the carpet. It was generally very noisy.
This was clearly taking its toll on Vaggie, who was sitting alone not too far from the rest of us, trying to read a lengthy novel on deep-sea creatures. She kept getting more and more irritated until she finally snapped and told us all to shut up.
We quieted down and stared at her in unison.
"Oh, you're spoiling the fun, V! Why don't you have a drink with us, hm?" I wave for her to join, and she shakes her head and returns to her book, muttering something I can't quite decipher. I hop off my seat and trot over to her, stumbling a little as I am somewhat intoxicated. I snatch the book out of her hand and hold it above my head.
"Hey! Give that back!" She gets up and reaches for her book, but, seeing as she's shorter than me, can't get it. She stands on her tiptoes, grasping for the novel.
"Join us, Vaggie! You can't just sit around like that!"
She places her hands on her hips. "Since when were you giving me orders?", she sneers, holding a hand out. "Now, if you don't mind, I was busy reading."
"Come on, V! You're always so busy! Don't you ever do anything fun?"
"Reading is plenty of fun!", she states matter-of-factly. "Why don't you try it sometime?"
I'm about to make a snide remark when the front doors burst open. We all turn to see Charlie standing there, looking like she'd just swallowed a fly.
"What's the matter, Hon?", Vaggie asks, pushing past me to check on her girlfriend. Charlie takes several deep breaths before speaking. "My parents just called. They said they're dropping by to see how the hotel was doing so far."
Silence.
"They what now?"
I toss aside Vaggie's book and run up to her side, gripping Charlie's shoulders and looking her straight in the face. "Please tell me this is a joke! Your parents? They're like, the most important people in Hell! You really think they'll be pleased to spend time in this shithole?"
V gives me a look that tells me to shut up or else. I quickly shuffle away from her and let her handle the issue.
"Listen, it's alright. Just calm down. It's okay. They're just your parents. I get that you're stressed, but how bad can it be?"
"How bad can it be? Vaggie, you know that they don't like the hotel already! They think I'm wasting my time trying to redeem sinners, and if they see that I barely have any clients, it will just confirm their beliefs! Oh, what am I supposed to do now?"
Vaggie doesn't respond, trying to think of something. Nobody talks for a long while.
Finally, I cut the silence by clearing my throat. "Well, I guess it wouldn't harm to do a bit of cleaning before our guests arrive! I'll go... dust the paintings-"
