Alice’s P.O.V
As I was walking to school the next day my mind was running in overdrive. Everything was falling apart. Every aspect of my life was beginning to crumble away. Not just my closeness with Niall but also my closeness with Harry and Sky was now in the gutter.
In my daze of feelings I didn’t notice that I wasn’t walking alone. When I snapped out of my confusion I saw a grinning Charlie standing next to me. I had been effectively avoiding him since Ella and I saw him at the café last week. I had convinced Ella that I liked him in an effort to hide my feelings for Niall and she was constantly bugging me about it.
“Hey Ali, haven’t seen you in a while.” Charlie said, walking alongside me and grinning encouragingly. I didn’t want to be mean, but he was interrupting my much needed alone time.
“Yeah, hi Charlie, how are you?” I replied quietly, pulling my sleeves over my hands as the winds picked up.
“I’m ok. What about you, you seem kind of down.” Charlie smiled enthusiastically and I attempted to smile back but it was obvious that he didn’t believe me.
“Im fine.” Charlie frowned at my efforts to keep him out of my real thoughts. I don’t understand it though, since we had never been close. He took my right hand in his and pressed his lips to my cheek.
“Its ok Alice. I know you don’t want to tell me about it but I would love to be friends.” He said, still not letting go of my hand. I didn’t know how to respond, he smelled like wood in a field. That was the best way to describe it, like effort and simplicity. Almost the complete opposite to Niall’s scent, which was a mash of sweet and rustic.
I was confused as to why he had kissed my cheek but it made me smile. He was an easy person to be around. No expectations and no complications. His warm, big hand was still in mine, it was comforting.
“Thanks Charlie. I would love us to be friends.” I smiled up at him. He looked amazing today, despite the uniform.
His brown hair was swept in a way that was obviously not styled but would rival those done with products. His tanned skin was a huge contrast to my own pale complexion and I began to wonder where his parents were from. When I asked him this, he laughed and began to explain his heritage which varied from New Zealand to Italy.
“How about you?” He asked.
“Well, my Dad’s parents are Scottish but they moved to England before he was born and my Mum’s mum is French. I don’t know anything about her Dad, he was never around.” I admitted as he squeezed my hand that was still wrapped up in his.
“I heard about your Mum, Im really sorry.” He said and I nodded.
“It’s ok. I am really starting to come to terms with it. I ignored the facts for a while but Im accepting it.” I said, slightly confused as to why I was spilling my soul to him when we were only recently friends.
I wish that I felt for him as more than friends but I couldn’t. It would be so much easier if he was the one who I wanted to be with. It would be simple instead of a giant mess, which is the way it was with Niall.
