Chapter 2

I woke up with dried tears on my pale cheeks. I squinted at the morning light streaming through the cracks in my curtains.

I rolled over, checking the small blue clock that rested on my bedside table.

10:42

Shit. I stood up scraping my wavy red hair into a ponytail using the hair elastic on my wrist. Nell must have woken up hours ago, to an empty house. Dad goes to work at 7am as a painter. People prefer him coming in early, why, I will never know.

I heard the sounds of cupboards opening and closing downstairs and I rushed into the kitchen, hoping that Nell wasn’t the one attempting to cook.

I found Niall standing in front of the cooker; Nell was sitting on the counter next to him. He was flipping pancakes and feeding Nell strawberries as he did so. Niall was wearing a pair of jeans and a pale blue shirt that brought out his eyes. I snuck up behind him, wrapping my arms around his waist as I kissed his cheek.

“What are you doing here?” I asked as we turned and smiled at me.

“Well, I came to surprise you because I thought we could go into town today, maybe catch up with Harry and Sky, but I found Nell watching TV in the lounge. I went up and saw that you were sleeping so I made her breakfast.” Niall explained as he flipped another pancake.

“Thank you. Do you still want to go into town?” I offered, pulling nutella out of the pantry.

“What about Nell?” He said, turning off the stove and placing the pancakes in a pile on a plate.

“She has a play-date today with Kymberleigh Kemp’s younger sister.” I explained as Niall helped Nell off the counter and handed her a small plate with cut up strips of pancake on it.

“I know her! Was she the brunette girl from our Drama class a couple of years ago?” Niall asked and I nodded. Kymberleigh was really sweet; I could tell from only one class with her in all my years at school. She had dark hair, dark eyes but a bubbly and light personality that worked with anyone.

Nell placed her small cutlery in the centre of her plate, signifying that she was done.

“Do you want to go and choose what to wear today? Real clothes, no costumes.” I said as she pouted her lip. I shot her a stern look as she rolled her eyes and nodded, skipping up the stairs.

I turned around to see Niall holding up a chunk of pancake slathered in nutella. I took the fork in my mouth, pulling off the chocolaty mess and chewing thoughtfully as Niall took a bite for himself.

“Leave in 15 minutes?” He asked and I shoved a whole pancake in my mouth before standing up.

“Classy!” He laughed, gesturing to my bulging mouth, crammed with food. I smiled at him, showing my nutella covered teeth as he burst into hysterics.

I walked into my room swallowing as I skimmed through my clothes. I grabbed a summery, light blue dress and navy cardigan and carried them with me to the bathroom, where I showered, brushed my teeth and dressed. Brushing my ginger hair into its signature waves, I gave a quick brush of mascara over my eyelashes.
