As I flopped back on the high jump mat after making my jump, I grinned. This past few hours had been great. Everyone wanted to talk to me and no one criticized me because I was a girl. I wished I could just stay as myself for the term, though I knew I couldn’t.
“Hey, Jesse, is this your phone?” someone asked me as I sat up.
I bent my head backwards and saw one of the guys from the running club holding the phone my mother had given me yesterday. I tipped my head back up and stood, turning around and holding out my hand.
“Yeah, that’s mine,” I replied.
“Can I add my number to your contacts?” he asked.
“I, ah, yeah sure,” I shrugged, causing him to grin.
After quickly putting in his details he handed my phone back with a grin, before he waved and dashed back towards a group of guys to high-fived him and patted him on the back.
Guys are so weird.
“Hey, Jesse,” Hayden said, appearing beside me. “Do you mind giving me your number?”
I raised an eyebrow at him, causing him to suddenly grow nervous.
“That way I can, ah, text you all the newest sports carnivals coming up, to you know, help you get yourself out there, so ah, people can see how skilled you are,” he stuttered.
I laughed and held out my hand.
“Here, give me your phone,” I giggled.
He handed it over with a nervous laugh and scratched the back of his head. I added my newly memorized number into his phone and handed it back with a smile. He smiled back as he shoved his phone into his pocket.
“Do you mind if I give it to Blake?” Hayden asked as we began helping the High Jump team dismantle everything.
“Yeah, sure, go ahead,” I replied, slipping the pole over my head and onto my shoulders, before I rested my arms over the pole.
“That’s sweet,” he grinned.
I sighed sadly after we finished packing everything away. I couldn’t believe it was already three in the afternoon; I was having way too much fun. Hayden and I headed back towards the stands where Blake was waiting for us.
“God Jesse, you’re amazing,” Blake said when we arrived.
“Amazing? She’s better than amazing man,” Hayden laughed, ruffling my hair.
I have no idea how my wig hasn’t fallen off yet. Is it like, magic or something?
I doubt it’s magic, I’m sure you mother just went to extraordinary lengths to get one that will stay on no matter what.
Well, if you say it like that, it definitely isn’t magic. It just has demonic properties.
That sounds better.
“Damn, I need to go. Mr. Slaughter wanted to see me about something this afternoon,” Hayden suddenly said.
“What about?” Blake asked.
“I don’t entirely know, I will talk to you later Blake,” Hayden said before turning to me. “Sorry I couldn’t see you off Jesse, but can we keep in touch? It’d be really cool to see you again sometime,”
