My life was officially ruined. After home room ended, I walked around in a depressed daze for the remainder of the day, barely paying attention to anything or anyone. Why did everyone vote for me to be a maid? I was a guy, and apparently popular, so why me?
I mentally slapped myself. What am I thinking? I'm not a guy! I'm a girl posing as a guy! Hell, in just two weeks I was already thinking of myself as an actual guy. This couldn't be good for my sanity.
"Hurry up and get on the field!" Mr Slaughter shouted into the changing rooms that afternoon.
I hopped into my sneakers and dashed outside with the rest of my class, not really wanting to be here. But, this was the grand final of our bombardment games. Once again we were faced with team A; all of their members glaring at us with murderous intent. Since Tuesday, my team had gone on and defeated Team B, which scored us a break yesterday as we were directly into the grand finals. And today, we were versing the victorious team A.
And this was no ordinary game. As we were changing in the locker rooms, the captain had marched up to me, grabbed a fistful of my shirt and made a deal with me. The losing captain had to dress up as a girl and be the winners personal maid for a day. Obviously, being me, I had agreed, fully determined we were going to win. But right now, I was seriously regretting the decision.
Even worse was the fact that the third year class and both team B and D were sitting around watching the game. If that wasn't enough pressure, having Kalem dressed up with a headband and Pompoms, calling out my name certainly was. If that wasn't pressure, I didn't know what was.
"Alright guys, no matter what we have to win this," I said, holding out my fist in the circle we had made for our team huddle.
"Yeah, we can't let Jace get embarrassed like that," Hayden said, also putting his fist out, directly next to mine.
"Let's win and show those guys who's the best," Blake grinned, also putting his fist in.
"Yeah!" Everyone else called, putting their fists in too.
"On three," I said. "One, two, three!"
"Team C!" We all cheered, lifting our fists up before turning around and setting up for the game.
"Alright men," Mr Slaughter called. "This is to be a fair game! If you break any rules, you are out! And I will be watching closely. Now, START!"
At top speed, I ducked down, grabbed a ball and pegged it at the closest opponent, getting him out right away. I then sprinted backwards, out of range as three other opponents stood up, aiming their balls at me. They all threw in unison, though by some miracle I dodged all three; the last barely missing my face. Then from beside me, Blake and Hayden stood up, throwing their balls at the three opponents who were still close and now defenseless.
Two of the three were hit, leaving Team A with only four players, while we still had a full seven.
Thunk
Make that six.
I dashed forward and grabbed another ball, throwing it at the captain who annoyingly dodged it. I clenched my fists and jumped backwards as he came at me with his own ball, throwing it at my lower legs, giving me no chance but to jump. Though when I did, Hayden was behind me and was hit instead.
"Crap, sorry Hayden," I called as he jogged off the field.
"I will forgive you if you win!" He called over his shoulder as he sat down on the sideline.
I turned back to the game and managed to avoid the ball that raced at my chest. I sighed in relief before picking up a ball and throwing it at my opponents. Irritatingly I didn't hit anyone, and both Blake and Jeremiah were caught out, leaving me with Zane. We looked at each other and grinned like idiots despite knowing we were probably screwed.
