Hajime had been completely confused the first time he met Jun and saw him and Oikawa together. He couldn't wrap his head around the two boys and why they were so friendly even though they were rivals.
When Oikawa had suggested the trick on Jun during their game in the prelims, he knew it was a bad idea. Everyone else, however, had been on board with stopping the monster of a player, so he knew his words would mean nothing.

He felt horrible, seeing the boy fall to the floor after the switch, but he didn't know his captain and best friend of so many years had such a civil conversation with the deaf boy after the game.
Oikawa had returned from the bathroom that day with such a sly looking smile, Hajime had wondered what he was up to.

After hearing that Oikawa had invited Jun to their gym to practice serves, he was incredibly suspicious of what the trashy man was doing.
However, Oikawa was very touchy with his rival and showed no signs of alter intentions. Jun had even called Hajime by his first name, acting as if he hadn't broken his spirit the last time they saw each other.
Hajime almost wanted to correct him but realized Jun's enlightening way of speaking and communication with others lightened up the air greatly, and made Iwaizumi agreed to help them practice.

He felt now like he was in charge of making sure Oikawa wasn't pushing Jun or going through with any other tricks that might go through his tormented mind. Hajime always wanted Jun to keep his pure and innocent way of talking to others, and he wanted Jun to keep his friend happy.
It was rather selfish, he assumed, to want to keep Jun around longer. Jun had changed the way his captain practiced.

Hajime no longer had to force Oikawa out of the gym after hours. He no longer had to patch up the boy after his legs collapsed.
Instead, whenever he saw Oikawa packing up right after practice for the first time, he thought his friend had lost his mind.

"You're going home?" Iwaizumi had asked him.
"Yeah, aren't you?" Oikawa had asked him this as if this interaction was a normal Tuesday conversation.
"I would've thought you'd want to stay for a couple more hours."
Oikawa had quickly shaken his head and zipped up his bag, throwing the strap over his shoulder.
"No, I've got to go somewhere. I'm meeting up with someone."

This was their first practice after losing to Shiratorizawa in the Interhigh Prelims, so Oikawa not staying after school for extra hours was extremely suspicious.
Iwaizumi was tempted to follow the setter home, but he decided against it. If something was wrong, he'd figure it out sooner or later.

Oikawa had stayed later after the next couple of practices and then for a second night, he had immediately started to pack up.
"Where are you going this time?" Iwaizumi had asked in a more pressing tone.
"I'm meeting someone."
"That's not suspicious at all. You really are vague aren't you Assikawa? Who are you meeting up with?"
"A person."
"Family, a girl, you seriously aren't going to tell me anything?"
"It's something personal. Don't worry about it. I thought you'd like to see me out of the gym for once."
