"Now, for your next math assignment, I want you to pair up with someone to do it," Mrs Bitch Troll shrieked. I rolled my eyes as she started calling names. Apparently the names called were supposed to pick their partner. To me, that was the stupidest way to do it ever. Why couldn't she just let us choose our partners straight away without the name calling?? Ugh she's so stupid.
"Alexander Turner," the Bitch shrieked. Alex stood up from the other end of the room and immediately walked over to the empty seat next to me and sat down. I groaned in dismay. I hated that bitch even more now.
"Good morning!" The idiot beside me chirped as I groaned again in response.
"Aw come on, don't be so moody," He cooed as I glared at him.
"Go away," I growled. You can't expect me to be in a good mood. Math was first period. And it was with Mrs Bitch Face. Plus I was up all night last night surveying stupid surveillance videos of Alex's house to check for any intruders whilst feeling like a total creep as I watched both him and his mother sleep. To think I was in that bed with him that day..
I supposed I would get used to the hours after a while but that was my first night doing it and I needed sleep that morning. Yet I had to sit through Math and numbers, an annoying teacher and the main cause of my lack of sleep.
"This is your assignment to be submitted on Monday," Mrs Bitch said as she handed us our assignment sheets and dismissed the class.
"Did you listen to what she was saying?" Alex asked me as we walked out of class together.
"Errr.. Yeah some assignment thing," I mumbled as we walked to my locker.
"You okay? You sound really tired. Did you sleep well last night?" He asked in concern.
"Uhm yeah yeah sure," I mumbled, not paying attention to what he said, and yawned.
"Aria!" He yelled and I frowned at him.
"What?!" I glared again and he smiled in amusement. Taking my hand, he led me away from my locker.
"Where are we going??"
"Somewhere where you can sleep,"
"Wait-is the good boy skipping class?" I smirked, teasing him lightly.
"Yeah yeah whatever come on," He mumbled back obviously embarrassed.
Soon we found ourselves in the attic of our school's main building. It's surprisingly clean, like someone came up there regularly to keep it clean. It was a lot smaller than a normal house attic but had a higher ceiling. The only thing in the small room was a pile blankets that were placed in front of a big window. The view was fascinating.
"How did you find this place?" I asked Alex in awe. He merely shrugged.
"I happened to explore the school a lot freshman year and I found this and it became my secret hideout. No one knows this place except me, and now you," He explained as he spread out the blankets so it looked comfy. I slowly put my bag down next to his, took off my shoes, socks and my leather jacket and crawled into our makeshift bed.
He settled in next to me and whispered softly in my ear, "Sleep," as he let my hair loose from the tight bun I always kept it in and started stroking my long maroon hair. And with that I immediately fell asleep.
________________________When I woke up Alex was gone, but there was a note on his place saying he went for soccer practice. Of course, the captain of the soccer team couldn't afford to miss a session.
I blinked the sleep from my eyes and looked around the room again. To my surprise, his bag was still beside mine. The room was so small, the makeshift bed took almost 70% of the room, the other 30% was the tiny space between the window and the bed and the bed and the trapdoor area. It was cosy and cute and I loved it.
I tried to find something to do while Alex was gone and found a stack of books in one corner of the room. Alex was a bookworm? Who would have thought..
Harry potter, Hamlet, The lord of the rings, Macbeth, To kill a mockingbird, the scarlet letter, Tom Sawyer, lord of the flies, Fahrenheit 451, woah his books were all really good books that I've either heard of or read before.
I picked up To Kill a Mockingbird, one of my favorite books, and started reading. Soon, I became so into the book that I didn't notice the trapdoor open and Alex come in. I didn't even realize when he came up behind me and started playing with my hair.
Finally, he bent down and put his chin on my shoulder and said, "You should know, Boo's gonna save them in the end," I jumped slightly in shock and relaxed when I saw it was only Alex.
"You have really good books here," I commented, smiling slightly.
"Yeah well these are my favorites. I keep them here so I can read them after soccer practice," He told me, plaiting my hair then untying, then plaiting again in another style.
"Do you come here after every soccer practice?"
"Well, yeah I do. it's like my secret hideout, to hide away from everything," He said, still playing with my hair.
"Hide away from what?" I asked curiously.
"People I have to impress, goals I have to reach, people I have to take care of.. Life, basically," He answered honestly. What he said made me realize, maybe there was more to Alex than I knew. Maybe just reading up on his profile wasn't just enough to actually really know him.
"I wish I could," I stated wistfully. But the sad truth was, I couldn't. I was a spy on a mission. Even then, I was still doing my job. I couldn't hide if I wanted to.
"Well you could always come here again," He said softly, shyly? I couldn't tell if he was joking since he was still playing with my hair behind me. But somehow I felt at ease. For once I wasn't aware of every little detail happening around us and it was like the world had stopped turning in that room. Like a dream. Hazy but happy and peaceful. Maybe it was because I was leaning on Alex or maybe it was the feeling of the room we were in. I went for the more possible latter.
"Hm.. Maybe I will," I smile. Maybe just this once.. I'll let my guard down and relax. Maybe for once.. I'll let myself get carried away into thinking this was okay. That I wasn't his bodyguard and he wasn't my client. That everything was perfect. And for a moment, I almost believed it really was. Almost.
