Prequel: Astra
The phantom zone, was the keeper of Kara for many years, when she finally got to Earth, she wasnt alone. Fort Rozz followed in suit with the kryptonian pod. It was a hard time for Kara to adjust to Earth. Its customs were different than Krypton, but what should she expect when her pod got knocked off course. She moved in with the Danvers and had minimum connection with Clark. Kara would cry herself to sleep at night and have nightmares of what she saw when she got in space. Alex was there, though. She was the helper to Kara. For the return of that favor and to keep some traditions alive, Kara told Alex about Krypton.
She tried to not discuss her family, the people who gave birth to her. She tried to just discuss their customs on Krypton, but the older Danvers sister wanted to get to know her adopted sister. She wanted to know about her parents, her family other than them, too. She wanted to know about Kara's friends. Everything was causing her to question things.
"Kara... I just was asking about your parents.... anybody there. Not just the stuff krypton went by." Alex groaned as she knew the blonde was trying to shut herself off.
Kara shook her head. "They died Alex!!!"
Alex shook her head back at the blonde. "That's not true, they dont die unless they die in your heart." She spoke softly. "Did they die in your heart?"
"No... but they /knew/ what was happening and they didnt stop it...."
"They knew krypton was going to die?"
"Yeah... My uncle, Non tried to tell the world that the planet was dying.... that it was a matter of time.... but a guard tried to stop him..." she continues to cry as the memories flashed in her head. "He killed the guard...."
Alex walked over Kara and held her, rubbing her back gently. "What happened next?"
"Aunt Astra told me.... she wanted me safe.. she was more of a mom than my actual mom... I seen her more than anything, though she was a general for our military..." she looks up through the window, gazing at the stars. "Mom heard her in our home.... I never heard from her since.... shes dead... she has to be..."
That was the first time Alex heard about Astra. It wasnt the last, though. Alex questioned how Astra was for being an aunt and Kara told her. Alex didnt have an aunt or an uncle. She was in a smaller family than kara grew up in. She was fascinated by the blondes story of Astra and one year during high school, Alex died a streak of her hair white. Eliza flipped and was happy when it faded and grew out.
Now, it was about to be 2015. Alex sat in Kara's apartment with their friends waiting for the ball to drop. Alex was nesting a glass of red wine for once, something she didnt typically do. She was just uneased. They recently gotten back from midvale visit with Eliza. It was better than the previous years but this year Eliza kept asking, 'when are you going to bring a man home Alexandra?' It caused the redhead to question herself. She didnt know what to do. She couldnt even explain what she felt. She tried dating, that fail. She had sex with men, but she had no emotions towards it besides disgust.
She was conflicted. This had to something she had to figure out. Something that she needed to be answered. Not for her mother but for herself.
Five.
Four.
Three.
Two.
One.
"HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!" Everyone except Alex yelled through the apartment. Kara noticed that the redhead was deep into her thoughts. She removed the glass from Alex's hand without getting a fight. "What's wrong?" She asked as worriness filled her facial features.
Alex shifted herself, a bit uneased. Her mind was overthinking everything. "I was just thinking. Dont worry about it." She tried to shrug it off.
"So you'll be thinking for the rest of the year."
Alex just rolled her eyes at that comment before speaking. "Grow up..."
Kara groaned at the older Danvers sister's comment. "Fine... what's your New Years Resolution? Mine is to eat more potstickers and maybe reread the Harry Potter series."
Alex chuckles and shakes her head. "I dont know what mine is but that's a funny one for you.... I hear it every year." She felt better at the same time she knew she was lying. It caused her to feel uncomfortable. 'To find myself.' She thought it over and over. Ways she could do it. Ways to get it disappear. She couldnt do it without disappointing her mother again.
Alex pushed herself into work more. She didnt allow the thoughts to resurface until the flight Alex was taking to Geneva had some problems. At first, worry flooded the redheads brain. She hated she pushed them so deep. Until she felt someone stop the plane from crashing into the water. When she saw Kara save them. She knew exactly why she pushed down her thoughts, she was suppose to protect Kara, not worry about herself.
Alex tried to focus on Kara and chewed her out once she got to Kara's apartment. "You do realize how stupid you were, right?" She yelled at the blonde.
"I wasnt stupid, Alex. I saved you. Dont you think that you need to thank me?"
Alex shook her head. "Thank you?" She said sarcastically. "For what? Exposing yourself?"
"I did it to save YOU!"
"To save me? You think exposing yourself to the world would save me? What would Mom think? Hell, what if she finds out? She will kill me! I'm suppose to protect you. Remember what happened the last time you did something involving your powers? Remember that my dad gave himself up so you wouldnt be a lab rat? Now what?"
Kara's eyes filled with water. "You're my only family.... Eliza may be my Earth mom.... but shes not you.... she isnt as accepting as you used to be." She whispered. "She didnt want to hear stories about my family... you did... you're apart of that... I couldnt loose you, too." She wanted to protect Alex for once.
Alex was about to speak but a sudden knock on the door occured. It worried the two women beyond belief. Alex worried that she would loose her sister just like she lost her dad and she couldnt bare the thought of that. She went to the door instead.
"Who are you?" Alex asked, "what do you want?"
"I would like to see my niece please." Was all Astra could say before kara opened the door more, behind Alex.
"Aunt Astra!" Kara's watery eyes appeared brighter than anything. Brighter than a kid in a candy shop.
That's how things began to change in the redheads life.
