"𝐒𝐊𝐈𝐑𝐓𝐒, 2"

It had been a week since Diana confessed her feelings to Mariano, but also a week since they were never the same. Diana missed his soccer game the past week, which upset him though he didn't show it. He was considering Diana as his lucky charm. She would talk to him before his game and even make a cute poster with his name and number on it, something his friends teased him about. But since she didn't show up to cheer him on, he was off during the whole game.
Fast forward to today, the night of another home soccer game. Diana didn't plan on going, but she was asked to go by this guy in her English class. She didn't want to go to be malicious towards Mariano, she was going in order to take the first step in moving on. Unfortunately the guy she's giving a chance to, decided a soccer game was perfect for a first 'date', which sucks even more since it's Mariano's soccer game. Life's a bitch huh?
So now Diana was sitting in the bleachers surrounded by girls, mostly girlfriends of the soccer boys, and for first time she felt out of place. Thank god the games over though, she could finally leave and hopefully not see Mariano. She much rather watch him from afar than for him to see her with the guy she was with. Not that he cares, Diana thought.
"Hey, are you cold? You want my jacket?" Alexander, the boy from her English class, asked her. He noticed she was slightly shivering even though she wore a light sweater with her outfit. Diana's mother had been pushing her to go out with Alexander since he's everything she'd picture Diana to be going out with, which is also a reason why Diana said yes to tonight.
"Um, yeah, sure." She'd be lying if she said she wasn't cold, so feeling the warmth of his varsity jacket made her at ease.
The two were walking while talking about getting something to eat before he took her home. What Diana didn't realize was how she was about to pass the soccer boys heading home, one of them being Mariano.
"Diana." Mariano stopped in front of her, seeing her smile slowly drop as they made eye contact. He quickly noticed the varsity jacket on her shoulders, McCall, he cursed his name in his head.
"Mariano." She didn't want to look away from him. She had cancelled all of their tutoring sessions together, mostly because she was sick, but she still hasn't been able to see him face to face. Diana became awkward realizing Alexander was right next her, and she was right there having a moment with Mariano. "Good game, you did really well. As always."
"Thank you." Mariano could barely smile at her after seeing her and Alexander together.
"Yeah man, good game. There wouldn't be a team without you, Mar." Alexander spoke up, oblivious of what was really going on.
"Thanks man." Mariano felt sick to stomach.
You see, Mariano and Alexander were actually friends, they had been friends for a long time, though they weren't really close. After Mariano and Diana became friends, Alexander asked Mariano to hook him up with her, but he never did. And now, Alexander got what he wanted, he has Diana.
"Diana, can I talk to you for a second?" It might seem selfish of him, but Mariano wanted to be alone with Diana again.
"Um, Alexander?" Diana knew she didn't need permission from Alexander, but she was here for him, she didn't want to feel rude.
"Don't worry, I'll go start the car and bring it by the side walk." He left the two, slightly confused but not questioning it. Alexander didn't know about Mariano's feeling towards Diana, so he felt like he had nothing to worry about. He was wrong.
"Seriously? Alexander?" Mariano questioned Diana.
"What? What's wrong with him?" Diana was confused by his sudden outburst.
"I don't know, maybe it's because he's a total ass. Or that he's a wannabe jock who only does things to impress people." Mariano hated the fact that Alexander brought Diana to his soccer game, but even more mad that Diana agreed.
"He is not. He's a nice person." Diana was frustrated with Mariano. "Why does it even matter to you? Not like you care."
"Your right I don't care." Mariano wasn't believable to Diana.
"So then why are throwing dirt on his name? That's rude."
"Because-" Mariano couldn't finish his sentence.
"Because what? Huh?" Now Diana was raiding her voice, something she never does.
"B-Because I like you. Okay?" Marianos body softened as he let it out, like he had this weight on him wanting to let go. "Because I care about you."
He'd expected her to run into his arms and be happy with what he had just said, but that wasn't the case. Diana was furious.
"No. You don't get to say that to me." Diana made Mariano confused now. "You can't turn me down like that, and when I move on, just like you wanted me to, you get mad about it and say this. That's not fair. I was so upset and you acted like it was nothing, like it could be swept under the rug."
Mariano looked down, not being able to look into her eyes. He realized how she truly felt now, and it killed him. "I'm sorry, Diana. I didn't mean to hurt you."
"Yeah... I really wish you didn't." Diana walked away, not wanting to deal with it anymore.
Mariano stood there feeling like he just took a punch to the stomach. Now he knew that he screwed up.
