The last thing Alejandro wanted to do on a free day, was work at a flower shop. His mother made him apply to a local flower shop that was run by her friend. She thought that if Alejandro had a real job, he won't get dependent on social media for money. Now that Alejandro started his third day of work, he already wanted to quit and go to bed.
"Alejandro," his boss, Esmeralda, called for him, "could you come up front to the register while I go check on something in the back?"
"Sure." Alejandro headed to the front, seeing there weren't that many customers in the store.
His friends teased him for working in a flower shop, sometimes calling him 'flower boy' or 'tulip man'. And as much as he hated it, the pay was good and they don't get many customers so he spent a lot of time on his phone. And just like now, he was leaning on the counter scrolling through Instagram.
"Um, excuse me." A voice squeaked in front of the counter.
Alejandro looked up to see a fair girl with long black hair. Woah, he thought.
"I was wondering if I can order a bouquet of flowers to send to someone?" The girls' voice had an accent to it, but Alejandro couldn't figure it out. Where is she from?
"U-Uh, Y-Yeah. Yeah okay." Alejandro didn't know why he was stuttering, but he ignored it as he grabbed a book filled with pictures of flowers. "Do you know what type of flowers you want?'
He looked up at the girl, getting a better look at her face. He noticed she didn't really wear any makeup, natural, he thought.
"Yes. Um, white roses, and a bit of waxflowers." Again, the way she pronounced words gave off an accent that was hard for Alejandro to figure out. In fact, the way she pronounced 'waxflower' made it even harder for Alejandro to understand what she was saying.
"I'm sorry, could you repeat the last part?" Alejandro saw her cheeks turn to a pink tint. He knew from his family's past experiences how embarrassing it is when someone can't understand you because English isn't your first language.
The girl let out a small laugh. "Sorry. I'm not from here." She looked down in embarrassment, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Where you from?" Alejandro thought if he asked her questions it would make her less embarrassed.
"France. I just moved here." There was something about her that Alejandro liked, or maybe it was the fact he was talking to a foreign girl. "I'm Selene."
"Alex-or Alejandro. W-Whatever you wanna call me." Alejandro is never nervous around girls, so why is he like this? She was cute, there's no doubt about that, maybe that is why. He knew all the girls at his school, but Selene was someone he didn't know which made her different.
Selene giggled seeing the boy in front of her stuttering. Though she wouldn't say it to his face, she thought he was really cute, especially when he smiled. The two talked for a bit about New Jersey, even tried making plans to tour around the new city Selene is in but was interrupted when Alejandro's boss came back around the corner.
"Thank you, Selene, I'll make sure Alejandro has your order taken care of." Esmeralda gave the girl a sweet smile as she signed the order file.
"Thank you." Selene returned the smile then looked at Alejandro who never took his eyes off of her. "Um, well I'll see you around then."
"Yeah, definitely." Alejandro watched as she walked out of the store, smiling to himself thinking about how he's gonna brag to his friends about Selene.
As he started thinking about it, he felt a light hit behind his head.
"Ow." He turned to see his boss giving him the look. "What was that for?"
"I told your mother I wouldn't let you get distracted while working. I'm going to keep that promise. Now, go sweep the front of the door for leaves."
"Okay." Alejandro grumbled lowly.
"What was that?" Esmeralda questioned.
"I mean, Yes ma'am."
