Jeremy

That pocket watch of his was ticking;

Old Mister Lee was watching me

A scruffy dog licked my face

Was I really learning anything?

"As a student of the street, Jeremy,

you have much to learn

A well-told story can illicit pity

and there are many coins to earn!"

He dragged his lame leg

and nodded in our direction.

My poor dog and I nervously obeyed

beginning our interactions

We were dirty and pathetic

We certainly looked the part

When I cried and Scrapper howled

it really tugged at the heart

"Please sir, I'm so lost!

My momma must be scared

I ran away and now I'm sorry

I just need money for the fare"

We worked so hard to earn our keep

there in that hovel on Dover street

The beds may have scratched us

but at least we could eat

Scrapper, my protector and pal

was by my side all the time

until the day he was stolen

and I was nabbed for a crime

So the tales I once fibbed

were truly now, mine to live
