A Child's Treasure

As a child my favorite toy

Was made of thoughts and dreams.

It could take the shape of any thing,

And carry me away to any place

Hiding beyond the horizon.

Adventure wore many faces,

And I met many people and creatures

Along these tireless journeys.

They would stay in my memories

I thought forever.

Along the way,

As time replaced youth

With wrinkles and grays,

My memory faded.

The key somehow missing,

I was locked out.

The jungle grew thicker,

And I lost my way.

It happened before I knew it.

I grew up, away from childish things.

Now I have kids of my own,

And I think they hold the key.

Still the jungle is thick in my eyes,

And I can't see what they see.

They take my hand

Promising to guide me,

If only I sit awhile with them.

Sometimes I forget what is important,

But then I remind myself

They are my new adventures.
