pearls
she spent thirteen years building
to this one moment:
a walk across a stage in a gown.
they were steps taken with ease,
heels clicking on concrete,
steps taken by one who knew that
they deserved every minute of
traditional, celebratory fanfare.
yet, it was not as initially imagined -
the owner of the pearls she wore
didn't sit waiting, watching as she
always expected her to be. instead,
the seat was empty, but her presence
was felt in every single one
of those deliberate steps.
somewhere along the way
(to this stage, this moment),
moving forward for the sake
of moving
began to take more precedence
than movement with purpose.
