"What was that?" Anthony was the first to say anything when I sat down on the soft cushion of the chair.
I cleared my throat and tried to smile. "Excuse me, that was my boyfriend Dylan. He's not usually like this. He just gets easily jealous. I want to avoid the whole jealousy thing."
Amanda rolled her eyes before she took a sip of her caramel-latte. "Yeah, he's not usually like that." She did those quote-unquote signs with her hands while using my words, and now I was the one rolling her eyes.
I knew Amanda and Dylan didn't get along so well, but they both tried, because of me. He didn't care about her at all and she cared too much about how he treated me.
"He's not really a good boyfriend. All he cares about is his stupid football career and se..."
I elbowed her into her ribs, and she shrugged. "What? Just stating the facts, sis."
I shook my head and turned to the guys who looked all confused, searching for answers in my eyes. "Well, he's an ambitious young football player who wants to live out his dream of going pro. I'm trying to support him the best way I can."
Anthony raised his eyebrows and stared at me in confusion. "And does he supports you?"
Kio nodded and added: "Yes, I heard that he doesn't like it when you make Tiktoks. Why is that, eh?"
I closed my eyes. I didn't want to talk about the problems with my boyfriend. We'd been in a relationship for one year now and at first it was going well, but now?
I wasn't sure anymore."You know what, can we change the topic or something? I'm not really in the mood to talk about it right now."
Kio swallowed and nodded before turning to Amanda, sparks flying between them, giving me a knowing smile. "You're coming to the party, right?"
She nodded affectionately before nodding at me, but her eyes remained locked with his. "She's coming, too. And Kanzie, who you've already met."
Anthony frowned his eyebrows and looked at me. "But you just told your boyfriend your grandma's coming and your mother..." He held back when he saw the look of guilt in my eyes and Amanda's look. She was proud. "Ohhhh you lied."
I cleared my throat and swallowed hard. "Yes, and I feel terrible. I usually never lie, but I really want to go to that party."
"Why don't you just tell him?" Griffin asked, and Bryce nodded. "Yeah, or bring him along."
I shook my head and opened my mouth to explain, but Amanda replied. "She won't tell him because she's afraid he'll get mad and she can't bring him because he hates parties. He's just a boring, but still hot, asshole."
Kio's head shot up, his cheeks a little red. "Hot?"
No one really paid attention to his muttering except Amanda, who just looked at her hands and bit her lip. "No, no, I didn't mean hot as in hot as you, I just meant..."
Before she could embarrass herself any further, I interrupted her. "He's not boring, parties just aren't his thing, you know?"
Amanda rolled her eyes. "Just stop talking about him like that. Face it: He makes you boring because you're a wild party girl and he's just not right for you."
I shook my head and was about to answer when my cell phone vibrated in my pocket. It was my mother. "One second." I said, getting up and taking a few steps away from the table before I answered the phone. "Hey, Mom, what's up?"
"Hey, Pancake, I just wanted to tell you that Granny's coming to visit. She's coming over tomorrow night, so you should be home."
My feelings were mixed: On one hand, I was very excited to see my grandmother again, but on the other hand, I was disappointed that I couldn't go to the party.
"But, Mom-."She interrupted me. "Don't worry, honey, I already cleaned your room. It wasn't a big mess. I have to go now, Dad's having trouble with his back again, you know, the old shit."
"Mom..."
"Oh crap, I just said shit. I'm sorry, but you're not three anymore, so it won't be so bad, eh?"
Just as I was about to answer, she cut me off again. "Great, bye. Love you, Pancake!" And then there was just the beep of the empty line.
I groaned and pressed my head against the cold metal of the streetlight beside me, breathing in and out. Amanda would be so disappointed. And even I was disappointed.
I jumped slightly when I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned around, ready to attack the serial killer, but relaxed when I met the eyes of my best friend. "Whoa, relax. It's just me."
"Am, you can't just sneak up on me like that. You know I'm like a nervous cat after watching criminal minds."
She laughed and nodded. "Yes, you really are. Remember the day you told Dyla..."
I interrupted her. "No, we're not gonna talk about that."
She laughed and I smiled, but when her laughter stopped, my face fell too. "What's the matter? You seem sad."
"Because I am." I told her and ran my fingers through my long, dark hair. "My mom just called me and let's just say karma's a bitch."
Amanda's face fell too. "Does this mean your grandma's really coming this weekend?"
I nodded. "Yeah, right. And my mom said I have to be there when she comes, which is tomorrow night."
We stayed silent for a moment, both faces, like we were at Will Byers' funeral, before a smile grew on Amanda's face. "Let me talk to her."
"Talk to my mom?"
"No, dumbass" She slapped me lightly on the head and rolled her eyes. "Your grandma. She loves me. I know she does."
"She loves everybody."
She shook her head. "No, she hates Dylan."
"She doesn't like him very much." I tried to correct her, but she immediately shook her head.
"Don't even try it. Dislike would be a huge understatement."
