NATALIE
'Where's David?' I asked Jeff.
Jeff looked at me, and then down at the floor, looking terribly uncomfortable. 'Uhm, he went home.'
'Why?' I asked, finding it weird that he'd left without me.
'Umm ...' He trailed off, looking around for what seemed like back up. 'I don't know?' It came out more like a question.
'I better go see if he's okay, he usually only ever skulks out if he's feeling sick.'
But before I could walk away, Jeff's hand caught my arm. 'Nat, I don't think you should.'
'Why?' I asked, shaking my head in confusion.
'He went home with someone.'
I felt like I had been pushed off a cliff, my whole body plummeting towards certain doom.
'Oh.'
In that same second, my phone beeped.
Please come home.
I showed the text to Jeff. He just shrugged. 'Alright, let me call you a cab.'

Very quietly and very cautiously, I unlocked the front door and made my way straight to David's room.
Something wasn't right, I could feel it.
'Is the coast clear?' I asked, knocking on his bedroom door. I meant for it to sound funny and light-hearted, but it just came out kind of nervous.
'Yes.' He answered back.
Opening his door, I found him all tucked up in bed, an annoyed kind of look on his face.
'So ...' I trailed off, kicking my shoes off. 'I'm not going to catch anything if I get into this bed with you, right?'
'Nothing happened.' David said, flinging back the covers so I could get in next to him.
Crawling in, I instinctively grabbed for his hand, holding it tight in mine.
'Do you want to talk about it?'
'How did things go with Fletcher?' David asked, diverting the conversation.
Fletcher had been nice enough, funny even, but he'd had to leave early as he had classes first thing in the morning. We exchanged numbers before he left.
'Uhm, fine, it went fine.' It suddenly felt weird talking to him about that kind of stuff.
'I'm glad.' He sighed. 'Because I pretty much flipped out at this random girl I brought home.'
'What do you mean?'
'I mean, I suddenly became acutely aware of the fact that she was a stranger and that I'd invited her into our home.'
Our home. Even under the circumstances the words warmed me up from the inside out.
'Why does intimacy scare you so much?' I asked from where I lay next to him, his fingers entwined with mine.
He laughed, like he couldn't believe my words. 'I'm not scared of intimacy.'
'Intimacy is not the same as fucking, David.' I turned on my side to face him. 'Look at me.'
He glanced over at me. 'I am looking at you.'
'No, really look at me, like fully face me with your entire body and look me in the eyes.'
