NATALIE
All I had done for the past week was try to make sense of New Year's Eve.
I'd tried to make sense out of what I'd said and what I'd done, and every time I finally came up with an answer, he'd look at me and everything I thought I'd worked out would just fall apart.
On the Friday following New Year's Eve, I decided to just be happy with the fact that the whole thing hadn't damaged our friendship or our working relationship, that I would probably never know exactly what I was thinking in those final seconds of last year.
'Nat!' David yelled from the living room. 'Come here a sec!'
'What's up?' I asked, making my way over to the glass sliding doors that he and Jason were standing in front of.
I stood beside them, looking out onto the backyard, noticing a bunch of workmen measuring up the yard.
'Oh god, not the pool again!'
'These guys reckon they can do it in half the time and at a reduced price!'
'Do you even hear yourself? That sounds super sketchy.'
'I really want a pool!' He whined, crossing his arms.
'Well, if we moved, like I want, than we could buy a house with a pool!' I fired back.
'But I love this house-'
'You guys really sound like a married couple right now.' Jason laughed, interrupting our bickering.
David and I quickly looked at each other, eyes wide.
For some reason I felt like we had just been caught red handed, even though there wasn't really anything to catch.
'Erm.' David coughed, looking away from me. 'No, we don't.'
'Yes, you do.' Jason laughed again. 'God, can you imagine the two of you married, you'd kill each other. It would be really funny.'
'Let's just agree that would never happen and move on.' I said quickly, moving away from the glass doors and onto the couch. 'And also, that's a definite no to the pool.' I said, picking up my laptop
'For now.' David said, sitting on the bean bag across from me.
'Let me tell you this dude, the only way you are getting pool, is if we buy a different house.'
'We?' He asked, quirking an eyebrow.
'Well, you. But I have to live in it too.'
Jason laughed again, shaking his head. 'Totally married.'
'Can we talk about something else now, like the Vegas trip? We leave tomorrow and there is still stuff to sort out.' I asked, getting exasperated.
'Shoot.' David said.
'Okay, well first of all, I still need to book the hotel, do we have final numbers on whose coming?' I asked.
'I think it's the whole group, everyone's said they're coming.' Jason answered.
'Alright, I'll book for the usual.' I said, writing myself a note. 'Are we doing Caesars Palace again?'
'Yeah, that place was dope.' David agreed. 'We also need a party bus at our disposal.'
'Already got that.'
'What about flights?'
'So, because we're booking quite late, I had to split the three of us up. Two on one flight, and one on another. So I was thinking you boys can take the first flight, and I'll follow on the second, which is only half an hour behind.'
