Ch. 25 The Start of Something New

After everything was said and done, the journey to the New World was memorable, not in the best way. You encountered different Sea Kings, other pirates, Marines, and so many other obstacles.
  When you lot arrived at Fishman Island, you were greeted by an old acquaintance who would be the one to help Law and you get married.
  "Mai!!" You heard the girl yell out. You quickly turned to the person who yelled out to you, seeing a girl with short orange hair and a large fuschia hat running and waving at you.
  "Koala!" You happily exclaimed back. You ran up to meet her and gave her a warm hug.
  "Wow, look at you! Youve grown up so much!" You yelled as you looked at the short girl. Making her pout.
  "I'm not a kid anymore, ya know! And I'm only 2 years younger than you!" She yelled back playfully.
  "I know, I know!" You said between giggles. "I just wanted to tease ya."
  "Is this the acquaintance?" You heard Law say as he walked over to you. You turned your head towards him and gave him a nod.
  "I met her a few times back during those times. We lost contact after I had managed to escape, but jii-chan informed me that Fisher Tiger had managed to free some people. And that a little girl with shaggy orange hair was one of them!" You explained.
  "So it was a great surprise when speaking with one of the revolutionary informants that it turned out to be Koala." You smiled.
  "Oi! Don't just casually mention that!" Koala yelled. Cause you to flinch back and give her a half hearted apology.
  "Well, I'm glad that it's someone that Mai trusts. So am I right to say that you are the one who will be officiating the ceremony?" Law asks the girl.
  "Yessir!" Koala gave him a fake salute.

The three of you made your way through Fishman island gather provisions and anything else necessary for the crew and the the small party seperating.

  You had been ignoring the two that kept getting progressively louder with their sighing. They would always follow up with rather passive remarks about 'attending a certain wedding.' You decided to ignore the pair because you had to think out just how much food, clothing, and other provisions you and Law would need since it would just be the two of you traveling for a while.
  "If only we could see a certain captain marry another certain captain because we care about them very much.. isn't, that right, Shachi?" Your brow began to twitch at the constant banter between the two.
  "If only those two certain captains would let us go so that we can support them.. huh, Penguin?"
  It went on like this up until everyone made it back to the docking site where the Sub remained. You then heard them both make yet another overdramatic sigh and that made your fuse blow.
  "Okay! I get it! You want to go!" Your voice rised with every word. "I would honestly love the two of you to come with us, but the less people that know about this the better!" You began shaking as the pair shrunk away. "This isn't just us getting married, this is so that I can visit my brother! To visit White Beard! Their resting place can never be revealed!! Why do you think it's only 3 people going?!" Your face was red from anger and sadness. You just wanted them to understand how important this was to you and why it needed to be protected. You hadn't realized that your shouting caused the rest of the Heart Pirate crew to start gathering to see what was going on.
  "Oi, what's with all the shouting?" You heard Law chime in. You hadn't turned around because you were trying to calm yourself down enough to have normal conversation. Unfortunately, your voice was still shaky from the volume you were shouting at.
  "I-I just… got carried away. I didn't mean to shout, but I just wanted them to understand why I've been so strict about this.." you said, looking down at your feet.
  "W-"
  "It's not her fault!" Both Shachi and Penguin interrupted Law.
  "We were being annoying and disregarded what she was feeling. Were at fault here, don't be mad at Mai!" Penguin quickly explained. Law let out an exasperated sigh and walked over to you.
  "No one's mad at Mai, I just wanted to know what the hell was happening. But, I am mad at the two of you from pressuring her like that. Apologize to her." Law ordered.
  "We're so very sorry!!" They both practically shouted with a deep bow.
  "I should apologize too, I shouldn't have blown up on the two of you the way that I did. It's not fair for me to take out my stress on the two of you. I'm really sorry." You said with as you let your head hang from both embarrassment and shame. They both eagerly accepted and began helping you with rationing and sorting everything that you and the crew were able to get. You were surprised to see that some of the crew also got both you and Law a few gifts before your departure! It ranged from foods, to clothes, jewelry, and small knickknacks. You were touched by the generosity and care that everyone showed you, you teared up which led to the crew freaking out trying to help calm you down. You ended up laughing at the panic and thanked everyone.
  You were then in your room packing up the rest of your belongings that you'll be taking with you and Law.
  "Oi, Mai." You looked over to Law who was making his way towards you.
  "The ship we'll be taking is stocked and ready for us to depart. We'll be leaving in 1 hour." He said. "I'm going to head back to the sub and let Bepo and everyone know as well as setting a few courses for them." He paused and gave you a quick kiss. "I'll see you on the ship, alright?" You hummed an approval at him as he walked away.
  "Ah! There you are!" You looked back over to the doorway to see Koala standing there.
  "I'm guessing Law already told you about the ship?"
  "Yeah, he just left not too long ago. I'm just double checking, making sure we don't forget anything." You smiled at her, gesturing to the room you were in
  "Are you ready?" She questioned with a small, sad smile.
  "For getting married? Absolutely." You paused. "For seeing Ace's grave? Not really.." you looked away. Koala walked over towards you, giving you a tight hug.
  "I know it's hard, but I think it will help you in the long run." She said letting you go and looking you in the eye. You gave her a small nod.
  "Yeah, you're right.." you trailed off. Remembering the last moment you shared with Ace. The time you spent with the Heart Pirates really helped you accept and cope with the death of your brother, but there will always be days where you lie awake at night silently weeping over him. That pain has never faded, but it's gotten easier, you just know that there will always be a hole in your heart that will never be filled. You and koala made light conversation as you sorted through your belongings. It never really settled in one topic for long. Bouncing around from life as a servant, life after serving, finding oneself and coping with the new found freedom. You started to sink back into thoughts of those times and all you had to endure. Your face growing dark as the memories of the people you met and the people who were killed before your eyes. It's was always hard. You knew that some of them couldn't be saved, but it weighed heavily on you because some of them were killed because of you.
  The nightmares never stopped over the years, you were just used to them. Constantly waking up in a cold sweat and lying in bed, trying to calm down. But ever since Ace..? It's been so much harder. You wake up crying or shaking, there are times where you can't sleep at all because of the sadness and guilt. You weren't ever all that close to the others you saw due, but having to watch yet another member of your family die was too much. It's been a year since he has passed, but it still feels so fresh and open. You always put on a brave face for the boys so that they wouldn't worry, but it was hard to get past Law. He was always around and the only solace you had was during showers when the water would drown out your cries and pitiful sobs.
  "You know, this isn't the first time I've had to comfort someone I care about because of the death of a loved one." Koala broke you from your thoughts. You looked over at her and she had a sad smile on her face, you stared and didn't say anything so that she could continue.
  "The day that Ace's death was released in the press all over the world, a good friend of mine was absolutely devastated by it." You looked at her, a bit more curious with what she was saying.
  "It was heart wrenching seeing him cry his heart out! I've never seen him like that over anyone, but this truly broke him." At this point your full attention was on her, someone else had that kind of reaction to Ace?
  "We couldn't calm him down for days, maybe even weeks! He cried and cried, shouting 'why!'" at this point, Koala had tears forming at the corner of her eyes remembering her friends heart ache.
  "Koala.. who is the person you're talking about?"
  "I don't think I should say, he's a high ranking member of the Revolutionary Army.." she said cautiously.
  Although you've done trade deals with the Revolutionary Army and are fully aware that your father is the head, you didn't know any high ranking officer, other than Kuma, Ivankov and Koala, out of confidentiality. So you were very curious as to who this person was.
  "Koala, if this is someone who was that close to Ace, then I should be allowed to know. I think they deserve to know what his final moments were." You hinted to wanting to meet with this person.
  Koala hesitated, thinking over her options and the consequences for saying who it was.
  "Okay.. his name is Sa-"
  There was a sudden loud crash that came from outside and a loud curse. You ran out of the room to see that Shachi dropped what appeared to be old medical equipment. As you took a closer look, you saw that he had a cut on his hand.
  "Hey, Shachi! Are you alright?" You asked, getting ready to help him to the infirmary.
