Kele's POV
I was getting really frustrated with warrior training the last few months. I know Uncle Tokala is just trying to get us ready for the position of head War Wolf of the pack, but that was still two whole years away! Keokuk and I just has our sixteenth birthday last week.
I could somewhat understand. After all, with the number of Rogues appearing among our grounds as of late, it was no wonder we were constantly busy. But seriously? Three in the morning was just ridiculous.
Uncle mind-linked us about two wolves crossing into our borders, one of which he smelt as a rogue. And here I thought I would finally have a night off.
Kele, focus! We're almost there. My twin mind-linked to me through my groggy haze.
I know, I know. I grumbled as I shook my head to wake myself up. It wasn't good to be distracted, especially when facing a rogue.
I sniffed in the air and the scents of the two intruding wolves hit my nose strong. As we drew closer, the sounds of gnashing teeth and whimpers rang out over the woods. We came to a silent halt in the woods, me creeping up to my brothers' side as we assessed the situation. It was the two of us and two other war wolves we were supposed to be leading on this scout, not the best numbers to face an unknown situation, but good enough as long as we analyzed the situation first.
We looked out over the trees two see two wolves. One was larger than most wolves I've seen, meaning it was likely an Alpha, Beta, Or War Wolf. It was a mix of gray and white fur and the paws that tread lightly on the ground looked itching to kill.
On the other hand, the wolf he was facing was quite small for a werewolf, he had to be an omega. The wolf was all black except for the red blood that littered his beat-up body. He was small, but as they continued the fight, I couldn't help but notice his speed. It was like he was a shadow with the way he bolted around; it was mesmerizing.
I was held in awe till a cry ripped through the night. I flinched as the larger wolf ripped into the side of the black wolf. A small growl nearly escaped my lips as I went to step forward.
Stop Keokuk told me as I glanced at him in anger.
Keo, he's going to die, we need to help him.
We don't know who the rogue is yet, Kele. Be patient.
The rogue? It's obviously that big wolf.
Keo was silent and the fight continued, and I begrudgingly took a step back, continuing to observe the fight. Despite the wound the black wolf took to his body, he continued to stand and snarl at the beast in front of him.
The larger wolf leaped at the black one, his mouth ready for a deadly attack. I gasped as I watched, ready to pounce but I was apparently too slow. I watched in awe as the small wolf darted to the side, working hard to steady his back feet as he lunged at the large wolf. His teeth sank deep into the other wolfs neck and we all heard the sharp crack that rang out through the woods and the larger wolf fell dead to the ground.
Both Keo and I stood on our toes; clearly this black wolf was easy to underestimate. We watched as he stumbled along through the small clearing, panting heavy with each breath. He made his way to a small sack I just now noticed lying on the ground. When he reached it, we heard the familiar cracking of bones as they broke themselves apart and readjusted. Soon, in place of the black wolf stood a small boy, most likely the same age as me. He gasped in painful breaths as he struggled to put on his clothes. He had managed to get on a pair of torn up jeans before a crack rang out in the woods.
My head shot to one of the war wolf trainees. The trainee put his ears flush against his head as he whimpered an apology. I barely had time to shoot him a look before turning back to the intruder. I was met with a pair of bright emerald colored eyes. Our eyes locked for a mere second before he grabbed the rest of his things and darted into the woods.
After him! Keo and I called at the same time.
We raced through the woods after the boy. It was easy as we were still in our wolf form and he was in his human form, no doubt too injured from his fight to shift again. We caught up in no time at all, easily surrounding the boy.
He stopped with his hand over his ripped-up chest, his black hair knotted and falling wildly across his eyes. Bright emeralds shined with a mix of alertness and caution, carefully analyzing his situation as he looked at the four wolves surrounding him.
"I-I didn't mean to come... o-onto your land," he tried to speak firm, yet his voice was hoarse and shook with pain from his wounds. "I promise... I-I'll leave- "
Before we even had a chance to respond, his eyes rolled back in his head and he dropped to the ground, breathing heavily.
Keo and I exchanged a nod before shifted and walking up to the boy on the ground.
"Is he dead?" I asked as Keo went to turn him over.
"Not yet," My twin replied. "But he's pretty badly injured."
I nodded. "Well... we can't just leave him here to die. Should we take him to the pack house?"
Keo was silent for a moment before he stood and nodded. "Yea, we'll have the doctor fix him and Adriel can deal with him."
Together, we scooped up the boy in our arms and laid him gently on the back of one of the trainees still in wolf form. The boy was worse than we thought; his entire body was littered with scars, both old and new. Bruises colored his face purple and yellow and it was clear from his rapid breathing and warm head that he was running one hell of a fever.
"C'mon," I said to the trainee as he adjusted to the boy on his back. "Who knows what these kids hiding. Let's get him back before he wakes up and tries to kill us all."
A/N: I promise the chapters get longer :)
