Adriel's POV
It had been three days since the little rogue wolf tried to escape. It had been three days since I made the mistake of rejecting my mate and sending him running. And it had been three days since my mate had closed his eyes.
When I saw him in the woods, limping and clawing his way away from me, my heart screamed in pain. When he stared at me with those ruby red eyes with panic and fear, I could feel my heart shatter. I hurt him so much, he was willing to go through all that to get away from me.
His back leg was broken, I could tell at a glance. His front two legs were badly cut up and crusted over from the burns of the silver cuffs. I could tell from his breathing he wasn't well and yet, despite all that, he still growled and attacked me when I told him to return with me.
I was shocked that he could still move, let alone at the pace he had taken off at. I mean, I was fast but damn, he was injured that bad and I still put in my all to catch up to him. When I saw him lying there on the ground, his breathing heavy, my legs trembled at terrible thoughts that ran through my head. I shifted back to my human form and quickly made my way over to him.
In no time at all, Bly and a few of her trackers caught up with me.
"This him?" Bly asked as she too shifted and walked up to my broken mate.
I could only nod my head. "He's badly injured," I said as I felt his head that was burning with a fever no doubt.
"Mm," Bly spoke before checking his body for any other wounds. I let out a low growl as her hands touched his skin and she backed up. "Easy there Alpha, I'm not making a move on you man. Just trying to make sure he's alive."
I shifted uncomfortably on my heels. I didn't even mean to growl at her, it just came out when I saw a hand reach out to him. Without taking my eyes off the broken little werewolf, I scooped him up and held him close to my chest.
"You're right. Let's get him back to Ayana."
I thought he would squirm and wiggle the entire walk home based off the little I knew of his personality. And yet, it was the complete opposite. He let out a small moan when I brought him close to me and even snugged himself closer as we went along. I couldn't help but smile at his adorable reactions.
He was so different when he slept. Awake, his eyes had held nothing but caution and fear towards the world around him. Now, asleep in the Medical Ward, it was like he was at peace at last.
"He's only like that when you're here, you know," My older sisters voice sounded out quietly through the room. I turned with a start, not letting go of the small boy's hand I tightly gripped in mine.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean the boy," Ayana spoke. "Its like when you're here, by his side, he's calm and serene. But the moment you leave, he face contorts and he sweats and moans like crazy, clearly in pain and struggling."
I furrowed my brows at Ayana's words. I didn't like where this was going.
She took a deep sigh. "Listen, Adriel, we don't know much about him. Hell, we never even got his name. But I get the feeling he's not going to be the easiest to deal with when he wakes up."
I lowered my head in shame. I didn't need to ask. It was clear from what she just said he had something going on in his life, something that scared him bad. The only reason he was calm around me was because I was his mate. It was part of the bond that your mate makes you feel safe and cared for. And yet, I had rejected him. I told him straight to his face that I didn't want him. And now, whatever he was dealing with, there was no way he would trust me to help him. Hell, he ripped his own hands out of silver laced chains to get away, what wasn't this kid willing to do to escape me?
