Ever since she can remember, Janis has had a special tree.
A tall tree, with a myriad of solid branches.
A tree that she could talk to, venting her problems.
A tree that never made fun of her clothes, her hair, who she liked.
A tree that listened.
Janis would climb that tree after school, and just talk.
Regina. The Plastics. The slurs. The bullying. The names.
She would cry, scream about the unfairness of life.
Many times, she considered throwing herself off of the branches and falling.
She never did, forcing herself to climb down slowly.
Then, one day, Janis met Damian.
A light shone on her life.
She went to the tree less often, and talked quickly.
She wanted to hang out with Damian.
Nearly all of her stories were about how amazing Damian was,
She loved his flamboyant nature, infectious grin, and protectiveness,
She made them bracelets with Platonic Soulmates Forever written on the thread.
When talking to the tree, she nearly always had a smile on her face.
Then, one day, Janis met Cady.
She stopped coming to the tree.
