I miss the cantors of the morning,

Proud declaimers making good

With cheery song and gimlet eye

On night's bold promise that we

Live, laugh, love another day,

Untouchable in high towers that,

Wind-rusted red and gold,

Marry earth to Heaven despite us,

Defiant of our indifference.
