Verity's POV
What day is it today? My head is spinning and I have trouble focusing on things around me. For some reason, I've been having much more trouble going through my regular routines than ever before. Even being awake often almost hurts these days. And falling asleep almost impossible. Even more than before. I can't say that I'm shocked but still...
Oh, it's our sixteenth birthday today. I cancelled everything that I was to do this afternoon a while ago. Each year for our birthday, the two of us bake a cake and buy each other a present. Then we hold a small party just for the two of us. Maybe a bit lonely prospect but it sounds better than ever this time.
"What? It's your sixteenth birthday today?" Daniel asks, looking lost. I forgot they don't now when our birthday is yet. Or at least they didn't cause they obviously do now.
"How come we didn't know?" Lucas asks bewildered, sounding a bit hurt. I understand him, really, but it's not like we kept it from them on purpose.
"It just never came up," I mumble. Seriously, although we already were friends this time last year, the day of our birthday fell on weekend and at the time Lucas was away and Daniel had a fever. And our birthday isn't such a big deal, so I forgot to tell them about it afterwards.
Daniel seems to let it go, he just smiles and says, "What are your plans for this day?"
"We'll bake a cake and get presents," Missy says excitedly but only answering the question and not mentioning anything Daniel didn't ask about specifically.
"Sorry for not knowing about this sooner. Could we invite you two to a café? We can buy a cake there," Lucas suggests.
"That would be great," I agree. I internally sigh because it seems my day won't be as short as I was planning for it to be. But I might enjoy this more than I would think. And I would never take this opportunity away from Missy. It's the first time since our mom's death that we won't have to spend this day just the two of us.

I am soon able to forget about my lack of energy. We find a table in a nice café near school and take a seat. We order a white chocolate cake. It's our favorite. The atmosphere is really pleasant. There are a lot of people smiling and the waitress that takes our orders is acts very kind.
After a while, the waitress brings our cake. There are candles on it. Me and Missy blow them together like we always do. Although I don't have a wish. Does it even work if two people blow the same candles? It doesn't matter. Missy's wish won't be ruined anyway.
"What did you wish for?" Lucas asks curiously.
"She didn't make a wish," Missy looks at me accusingly. We have already had this discussion. "I always try to convince her to do, but she never wishes for anything."
Lucas looks at me thoughtful and then, as if he remembered something, searches through his bag. He pulls out something and motions for me to show him my hand.
"Here, this is for you," he says with a smile as he puts a tiny silver bracelet with angel wings on my wrist.
"But how?" I ask. "I remember you saying you didn't know it is our birthday today."
He tears his eyes away from my wrist to look up at me and speaks in a slightly nervous voice, "I came across this when I went shopping a little while ago and it made me think of you. I planned to give it to you at some occasion. What better opportunity than your sixteenth birthday? I hope you like it."

After eating the cake and talking for a while more, we step out of the café and head to the subway station.
