You and Ford spend the next few days down in the basement. Some days, you would try and make the glue. Ford would watch from over your shoulder and you would love explaining the different ingredients you would use. "See, this is called Menj. It comes from a specific flower in the woods that cries if you read to it." Other days, Ford would teach you how to build stuff out of the tech he had lying around. You can tell that he really enjoys teaching someone else his vast knowledge of it, excluding Dipper. "Once you have this tightened, you can go ahead and...yes, that's good." You manage to make a few small things like a memory gun and a watch.
You help Ford make his own potion. Once. It is the one that you had created, with the sneezing and the floating and such. He seems to treat everything incredibly delicately, which is something you should definitely do when it comes to potions, but he is being a bit too cautious. "Ok Ford, now go ahead and add the twigs." You watch him as he takes three twigs and carefully drops them in. The concoction bubbles lightly with a pale blue hue. When it settles, Ford looks at you with an unsure look while you give him a huge grin. "You did it."
You help him funnel it into a little vial and you let him hold his creation. He looks very proud. "This is great! Oh, I should show Dipper and Mabel. They will love this." You almost laugh at his childish glee. "Ok, just remember that it's a contact potion so don't get it on anyone or they'll be...you know." He nods then makes his way out of the lab.
You sigh happily, a small smile on your face while you cleanup your little workspace. It feels nice for someone to have some interest in what you do for once. You don't have any sun down here but, thankfully, the watch you made for yourself tells you that it's just past two in the afternoon. You wonder for a moment what Bill is up to until your stomach drops a bit. You slow your movements and another sigh comes, but now with more of a tremble.
You start to look around the lab a bit frantically: searching through cabinets, tossing away loose papers, opening inventions, whatever you could get your hands on. "Power crystal...Power crystal. Come on Ford, where do you keep it?" Your search lasts for 15 minutes, much longer than you expect to be given, until you hear the elevator come down. You find nothing and no sign of where the crystal could be. No wonder Bill said this would be such a hard task.
"(Y/N)? A small mistake has happened." When Ford walks over to you, you are in the middle of grabbing some papers that you could have swore had the crystal on them. But they don't and you are left to quickly set them back into place with a bashful smile towards Ford. You clear your throat, noticing the empty vial in his hand. "Let me guess, Dipper and Mabel are now floating to the ceiling?"
You head upstairs after Ford explains, heading directly to the twins' bedroom. Apparently, Mabel accidentally spilled the potion all over her and Dipper because of her excitement. Sounds about right. When you get to the two, they are indeed both glued to the roof thanks to the floatation properties of your potion. "Mabel..."
"Uh, oops?" You sigh and roll your eyes playfully with a small smile, walking to the center of the room. Mabel seems pretty calm though Dipper doesn't seem to be enjoying his predicament. "Ok, you two. Try and stay above your beds so you get a soft landing. You should sneeze anywhere between the next 1 to 10 minutes, give or take."
Doing some damage control isn't too difficult. Dipper sneezes after about three minutes while Mabel takes an entire 15. Not that she seems to mind since she just floats around the ceiling, enjoying herself. Once they are back on the ground, you tie them to the bed with a short rope so they can only float up a few inches. You explain how the potion works, they'll be like this for an hour at the least, and to not undo the rope or leave the room. Dipper seems fine with this while Mabel is bummed out. You head back downstairs once everything is sorted out. Ford is already back to work so you do the same.
The next few days pass and it's been a week since you started working with Ford. With the small breaks you get, you sometimes visit Bill to see what he has been up to and that he hasn't burned the house down. The first time you visit, which is on day four of nonstop work, you expect Bill to be hanging on you until you leave. Instead, he keeps himself to the book he is reading and doesn't do very much in terms of attaching to you. He asks you about the crystal, how the Pines are doing, and if you are ok. Other than that, he is silent. The times you visit after that are extremely short.
Your worry for Bill has to be held back however, in favor of getting your work done. You can tell that Ford is trying to keep your stress down by keeping you entertained with stories of other dimensions and inventions he has made, or attempted to make. Sometimes it works and you enjoy spending some time chatting with him, but there are some days where your mind is weighed down by the responsibilities you now carry. You aren't one for conversing those days.
It is nearing the end of your seventh day. Again, you are fruitless in making a magical glue and today is especially rough on you since you accidentally get burned by a failed potion. Ford doesn't bother you much since he recognizes how stressed out you are, though he does offer you the occasional snack. He is probably the sole reason you have eaten at all the past few days. As you are putting your ingredients away, you hear the elevator and watch as Dipper rushes into the basement looking a bit panicked. He finds his way over to you, still breathing a bit hard.
"(Y/N)! I was...in the forest and I passed by your place....All the windows are smashed in and I think...I saw someone inside!" Ford's eyes widen and he looks towards you with a slightly worried look in his eyes. You feel your stomach churn and your heart drops. "I....uh..." You try to get words out but your throat seems to close up. How do you explain a random guy that has been living with you for a few weeks?
You don't get to think about it though, because you suddenly realize that your body is free falling down to the ground. You hear some vague shouts from Ford and Dipper along with a red glow before your vision goes completely black and you pass out.
