"Does anyone else feel like this table is a little bit too crowded?" Mark asks abruptly
We're all sitting in a booth on the far right side of the cafeteria. It's the people who usually eat here, the Favored Five of Wellsworth High, plus Lexi and I. Is it Crowded? Yes, but to me the mere thought of having friends seems crowded, especially compared to my usual lonely lifestyle.
"Finally someone else agrees with me!" Lexi says throwing her arms up in the air. I'm just about to get up and leave when Leo shocks us all, or maybe just me and Lexi.
"Bye Lexi." He smirks.
"What are you talking about? Low class over here is the one who needs to leave." 'Low class', I get a new nickname.
Noah gets up and slams his palm onto the table. Dishes clatter but other than that the cafeteria is silent.
"Ya, do you think you're better than her?" His already deep voice is low and steady, barely above a whisper. "You don't even know her!" This time when he slams his hand onto the table a cup gets knocked over, spilling clear liquids before rolling off onto the floor.
"Fine." Lexi stands up. "I'll leave, but only because I can't stand the smell of garbage." The thick meaty stew sloshes on her plate as she walks near me.
With one hand pinching her nose and the other holding her plate sideways she pours her lunch on me. The hot liquids run down the sleeve of my blazer as I battle with the huge lump in my throat. It weighs me down so that I can't speak or move.
The cafeteria is wild with commotion again. Some people gasp, others laugh and some even get up out of their seats, like Mark and Leo do.
They're now standing on opposite sides of Lexi, trays and drinks in hand. Leo starts by splashing his soda in her face. She flinches, and so do I, but she can't move much with Mark's grip on her arm. And his food now poured on her head and dripping from her shoulder length hair. His drink is the next to splash on her and Leo smears his plate on the front of her blouse.
"You can't escape something that's a part of you." Mark says letting go of her arm only to wipe his hand there.
Leo grabs my tray for more ammo.
I look away still wide eyed. My eyes focus on my shaky hands and legs. I force myself up from the booth and feel eyes on me as I run out of the cafeteria.
My legs don't stop. Not when I reach the hallway. Not when I hear someone else's footsteps behind my own. And not when I hear Mark call for me.
"Rose! Rose, stop!" He pulls my arm and I'm instantly backed up against a locker. His face and body inches away from mine. "Stop." We're both breathing and panting heavily. I realize how far we've ran and try lifting my head to make certain but Mark doesn't let me. He pushes me back against the metal and my head makes contact with something hard causing me to wince.
"When I say stop, stop! Come to me when I say come here and listen when I say listen." I nod my head out of sheer fear and he moves his hands, which I hadn't even realized we're pinning me against the lockers. He's too close to me, my mind is foggy.
"Don't play with me and don't confuse me. Do I seem easy to you? I'm not, so don't think for one second that I am." Even though he moved his hands his face is still too close to mine. In fact it seems like it's moving closer.
Closer. His lips touch mine. Wait, what?
I blink and they're gone. It was brief yet impressionable so boy is my face red! His is too and now he's all the way across the hall.
