*Two Years Ago*
"We could use this place for something." Cameron suggests while stretching his long arms out. It's dark and dimly lit by our cellphones and flashlights but I can see a crooked smile on his face.
We came to this aged, abandoned building out of sheer boredom. It has two stories, stairs and no windows. What it was used for in the past is a total mystery but time and natural disasters wore out the building to the point where there's nothing left but the infrastructure and a few dusty pieces of living room decor.
"It's too old."
"And raggedy." Mark and Leo complain.
"Exactly so it won't be a problem if we use it. With a bit of painting and furniture it could actually be pretty cool."
"There's no heating. In the winter time we'll be freezing our asses off." Noah throws out the next objection.
"Why don't we do the opposite?" Leo asks with a devious smile on his face.
I raise an eyebrow up at him from across the room.
"We could burn it down."
The guys all cheer and seconds later I'm pulling a lighter out of my pocket and striking fire to a set of hideous drapes. They cheer even louder and Leo begins working on a pile of scrap wood.
Noah pours out the remainder of his beer along a wall and soon Mark and Cameron are doing the same. Half of the building is in flames when we decide to stop choking for air and finally leave. We laugh and wheeze through the smoke and out the back door.
"That was crazy!" Cameron says after catching his breath.
I stare up at the blazing building, my eyes slightly watering due to the mixture of ash and dust floating around. The sound in the distance doesn't catch my attention until I notice the flashing red and blue lights.
"Shit." Leo grumbles.
We watch silently as police officers and fighter fighters surround the scene. We put just enough distance in between us so that they can't see us but we can still see them.
A hose and a ladder later Cameron speak up. "Why are they trying to put out the fire? Just let it burn!" He yells half drunkenly.
Leo rushes over to cover his mouth and judging by the way he pulls it back with a look of disgust Cameron just licked it. After wiping his palm on Noah, much to his confusion, he speaks. "We should get out of here."
•••
"Fire fighter fatally injured in an attempt to put out a burning building."
Noah breaks out into hysterics. "We could go to jail!"
"Correction: you could go to jail. I'm not sinking with this ship and I'm certainly not sweating over it." I say calmly.
"Oh aren't you lucky! Your daddy always manages to shield and protect you from anything that may taint your name."
My response is a simple shrug.
