You were woken up abruptly by a sharp pain in your chest, as if someone had stabbed you. You sat up and looked at your phone, which was brightly lit. You reached for it and noticed that David had messaged you 16 times, begging you to call him. His texts came in about ten minutes ago, so you rang him. He answered on the first ring.

"Hey....What's going on David?" you say, voice even.

"I have something to tell you love...and you're not going to like it" he says softly.

"David just tell me what's going on, it's three in the morning. I'm sure if you're trying to get a hold of me at this hour, it has to be important."

"I can't just tell you love, you wouldn't understand it, or believe me otherwise. I'll be over in a few."

The call ended before you could object so you threw on your bathrobe and crept to the kitchen. You flipped the kitchen light on and started the coffee maker. A few minutes later, you had a hot cup of coffee in one hand, and David was at the front door. You tied your robe closed and walked to the front door, wondering what David had on his mind at this hour.

You opened the door and David stepped inside, making his way to the kitchen. You had your back turned to him and had locked the door when you felt his hands at your waist. Your heart skipped a beat and you nearly dropped your coffee. Your hands met his and you pushed them away. You turned around to face him, nervous beyond belief. When you were face to face, you noticed all the things that you had been oblivious to, but pushed those thoughts aside.

"Dave, why are you here?" you mumble, setting your mug on the windowsill "Just tell me."

"Love, it's not that easy. This is rather difficult to tell someone. This is a very delicate situation and...."
David rambled aimlessly, and you placed your hand on his face, your thumb passing over his cheekbone repeatedly.

"Just tell me David, please." you say.

"Phoenix isn't coming back." He blurts out quickly, a look of regret and shame passing over his face instantly.

You felt like someone had slapped you, and you sank down the wall slowly. He knelt in front of you and you let the tears flow, not caring about anything but the fact that the man who loved you, who wanted to marry you, who wanted to start a family with you was never coming back.
You wiped your eyes violently and looked at David, who was crying too. You began to wipe away his tears, then your eyes met his. "Tell me why, David..." David sighs and closes his eyes, shaking his head in dismay.

"I can't just tell you love.... you wouldn't believe it..."

"Tell me anyway" you say, your heart began to race and your body began to tremble, as if you already knew what he was going to tell you.

"Phoenix is dead.... I'm so sorry..."

Your legs collapsed from underneath you and you let out a piercing cry of anguish. David's arms wrapped around you quickly, pulling you closer. You cried into his chest, his body tense and his breathing even. He wasn't crying anymore. Too consumed with your own grief, you didn't notice. You couldn't see that David had more to say, that his eyes that appeared to be filled with grief were brimmed with deception, and fear. You had no idea what was to come, nor what you were going to witness in the very near future.
