Argent sat on his well maintained couch with ice set between his legs.  The Pharmacist said he should be okay providing he stayed off of his feet for the next few days and to keep icing his injury.  He was stunned by what happened the other night and for the first time in his career he was caught completely off guard.  Their orders were clear; they had to keep surveillance on the house and to get close enough to plant listening devices on the inside and outside of the house.  Argent's supervisor insisted they do the outside of the house while people were walking around the inside.  He tried to explain about the large dogs but the politically savvy manager paid no attention.  He wanted to be able to go to the higher ups the next morning and tell them the job had been done , and it didn't matter what it might have cost them.  Two of the agents went to the rear of the little house hoping to get a couple of devices hooked up at the back door and one on the garage.  The other agent said he will look after the door which left the garage for him. When the agent reached the back entrance the last thing he had expected was for a dog to come out and grab him between the legs!  Argent ran towards his beleaguered partner when the dog let go and turned on him.  He grabbed his partner who was holding tightly to his slobbered parts and they moved back towards the fence all the while the dog stayed no more than ten inches from them.  They were pretty sure the large dangerous animal was going to attack any moment when the girl came out.

Argent's heart skipped a beat when he heard Devon tell someone to turn the light on.  He knew they had to get out of there fast, before they are seen.  The dog had become more frenzied and they had to do something quick.  His partner pulled his gun but Argent pushed his hand down.  He knew if they killed this animal, the girl would be devastated and he didn't want to do that to her.  He pulled out his stunner and fired it at the dog.  He yelped then started to whimper, it only took a minute for the dog to fall silent.  He was confident that her dog was going to be okay but in order to prevent hurting her he tried to step in between her and his partner.  Most agents would not have allowed any of this to happen.  They would have simply killed the dog and probably her as well.  Human life did not mean much and they are taught that removing someone was the easiest solution to all problems.  Don't worry about the harm you may do because eventually people will stop asking questions and all will be forgotten.  Argent knew this was going to be the case for Devon and he could not allow that to happen.

He smiled to himself as he watched her beat and then bite the partner.  This young beauty had a lot of spunk to her which he admired greatly.  In order to again prevent the other guy from actually killing her Argent had stepped in to stand between the two and that was when she struck!  She hit him so hard his legs buckled!  That was when the other agent stepped forward and attacked Devon!  He had to use everything he had to be able to move.  She was out cold on the ground and the agent was on top of her gun pointed at her head.  Argent jumped at him and pulled the agent off of her.  The look on his partner's face was of pure hate and anger which gave Argent the message that he was going to have to answer for this fiasco.  They could hear voices calling Devon and they knew they had to get out now.  The agent's helped each other to hide behind the garage then slip through the neighbours yard.

"What the hell were you doing out there Agent?" screamed the other fellow.  Communicators never knew each other's names nor were they allowed to be friendly with each other.  That way there could never be any compromises and the ability to follow orders is never questioned.  At least until now.  The young Argent knew he was going to be in trouble but he wasn't all that concerned anymore.  He knew there was something very wrong with the system and making plain folk along with their families disappear because some higher up has a problem with them no longer made sense to him.  He refused to get on the disposal unit which was frowned upon at the time but they were also short of field agents at the time to.

Argent was certain he could actually smell death on the agents in disposal.  They are the ones who do the actual murdering, men, women, and children.  It didn't matter how young and innocent they were, they killed without thought.  It takes a certain kind of person to do this day in and day out.  Argent was not one of those people.

As he sat with the coolness on his manhood he worried about the woman he now knew he was in love with.  The last time he saw her he could see her face already starting to swell and the blood running freely.  He wanted to beat his fellow agent down for hurting her.  Now he needed to decide what he is going to do.  More then likely he is going to be punished for interfering with his partner which can be handled unless they think he is a danger then he is doomed.  Argent had heard of other agents disappearing because they did not do the job as well as expected.  He liked his life and didn't have any intention of simply disappearing because they were upset.  Perhaps this is the time for him to go underground and help Devon and her family.  The biggest problem he faced was how does he introduce himself.  This is not going to be an easy introduction.  He sat back with his feet on the coffee table and took a long leisurely drink of C&C.
